Opto - they were keeping the stops VERY tight. The only percentage mentioned was by Sputnik who said you should never have it greater than 1%/2% max of your total portfolio, but when I thought about it later, that could be a big drop depending on portfolio size! He also stressed using trailing stop losses but only going upwards, never moving down (which I do). I agree with you that I have found so many times it has triggered when I don't want it to and that is why I have become so casual. Then again, I am sitting on some pretty big losses, naively confident that they will come back up (or more likely be sold at end of tax year!). I have also had some go through stop losses on profit warnings and didn't know you can pay a bit extra and have "guaranteed" stop losses so they will compensate if it drops further. All of the speakers reiterated the same message, get out if it is dropping.
I have known for some time my own portfolio is too unwieldy and I think the experts are assuming fewer stocks over a short/medium term so it is easier in that scenario to get out quickly and reinvest. Course was very professional, I would recommend.

I should also have mentioned the focus totally was on using charts and recognising patterns and points of resistance/support, so you would set your stop at the turning point. This I do!

jj Thanks again. I have the same tendancy as you, to hold too many stocks, and I don't think we are alone here!
Two camps I believe I investing: Spread your investment in a lot of stocks or invest in just a few and monitor them more closely. I am tending to favour the second scenario, but it can take a while to consolidate to this position particularly when waiting for some to recover(LOL) but that is the way I intend to move in the future, decission taken only last week!
Now for a large pot of tea.

Morning JJ, really pleased to have met you yesterday and choccie and that you got back to your hotel OK. I had to go back to car down alley and a club was turning out round the back so it was a bit scary. There was a bit of confusion with the bookings at my hotel. All the rooms had been block booked for MAM but I think when people were calling they were told it was full, thinking people were going thru tony, but the hotel received no names. Anyhow when we got back at midnite the manager said noone else had booked in so I had a choice of rooms, got the 4 poster of course!!! But it was a waste as soom had to get cabs to their hotel and come back for their car in morning. The chap I met that lives near me did just that, so we had coffee and also met up half way back for a break as well which was really nice. Shame you live so far I feel we could have some good chats. Heard mention that there may be one in London March/April? will wait to hear.

jj. re tight stops, these must be a problem, always being triggered by spikes. I think to set it lower just to protect against major losses would be more suitable for my trading levels. (enough but not anything that will worry the institutions) lol

Morning Opto and anyone else here, sorry I have a lot of posts to catch up so will do later. Clitheroe long way, with traffic took 7 hours to get there! coming home no problems so 4.1/4 hours (although stopped for 2 hours for coffee) had great time and met lots of new people.

Amber, good morning. You should have come to my hotel. They were locking up as I arrived back but was given key to fire escape!!! Thought of coming back to meet you but fell on to my corrugated mattressed bed instead - four poster would have been much better. Despite getting train at crack of dawn it was delayed for three hours at Lancaster (as we had gone through a red light), so "stuff" saving the environment, back in to my car again for the next twenty years!!! It would be good to meet up again. Trying to recall chap who lives near you!!
Think you're right opto. I used to work on 20% whereas they inferred much less than 5%. I am also not trading CFDs yet (intend to) so have stamp duty to consider and all strong advice favoured trading Dow not FTSE. It was interesting though. I have liked the CGT advantages of AIM but don't think most would touch them.

Wet all round then.
G'dafternoon boys.
Mind you, it was even wetter last night as we stood shin deep in water down the cellar 2 hours before the big invasion...a bit of a pump-nonfunction moment, that was.

Good afternoon folks
It was great to meet everyone at Clitheroe, I agree it is nice to put a face to the name, and Lads the Girls from this thread are certainly not the over 65 ex school mistress type like everyone imagined, trading just got a whole lot better.

Sputnik - Have just spent the afternoon putting in stop losses - it should kill two birds with one stone - a much needed consolidation of my portfolio and getting rid of a few of those "donkeys""!
Advice much appreciated even if my interpretation of it is a bit "loose" - things will be "flying" out of the exit door by next Friday. Please pass on my best wishes to Ruth. Her e-mail isn't "enabled" but I shall be in touch. Regards and thanks to all in the NW :-)
