Oh I am delighted to see some friendly faces in the old bistro once more.

Some one came on and said to expect news about a particular council wanting building land for housing immigrants/asylum seekers. I'm not certain which council was supposed to be considering this but I am not putting any credence on it. Rumour is just rumour until something solid comes out.

Also, there is a possibility of the Burford land being used for a housing development for RAF Brize Norton. They, the MOD, are apparently looking for 300 houses and Burford is only a few miles away.

Add to that a general feeling of confidence returning in aviation and Wiggins could be on the upturn. Cuneo doing well, possibilities at Lahr, Manston getting busier little by little and mooted big developments in the middle east. It doesn't take much to turn sentiment and that is what seems to be occuring.

Thats enough of that. Any more needs to be on the WGG thread.

Hilary
How does it feel to be a Guru? I am still in "student" mode and testing my selections, some OK others not so good. Just at present two of my more recent selections are coming up trumps. One is a Vasey favoutite DYS and the other SVB. SVB was a bit of a risky punt, especially with the open offer looming, but it went well and is going north quite nicely.

As you know I was sceptical about MEG, and you concurred. It has done nothing since and Slater is still pushing it like crazy. I will be interested to see what it does in time. Incidentally, Slater is friends with EK so Goodfella would probably identify him positively. Slater has loads of threads on Sharecrazy.com and pushes his stocks like mad.

Sounds like you should be OK for XP. I'm told by friends that some programmes run faster in XP despite the bloatware. I shall have to push the boat out sometime but I'm back in that old dilemma. I want to upgrade to XP 155, I want a flat screen display, around 450. I want a faster processor, that's new motherboard and processor another 250+. I might as well buy a new system with all the bells and whistles 1000.

Right, whos turn to make the tea?

Hi all, been a while since I droped in......

Socs, end of last year I got a new toshiba notebook (the tecki's say it's the most reliable one, which they all have to play with) and it came with XP. The notebook hasn't given a moments problem, but the XP has been a real pain..... Support is shit (The answer to every problem is to reload XP, which then wipes out all settings, infact any minor change to it's set up wipes out all settings!) - every 2 months or so I have to leave the notebook with a friend into software to sort out the latest XP problem, even though I've been getting all the patches etc. (What a struggle - usually end up having to use another option to handle the solution!)

I have a old tower (4-5yrs) with a early AMD chip, running with a late version of Windows 95 which never gives me any trouble. (Used for everything except the internet!) The notebook replaces the PC with Millenium which replaced the PC with Window 98 which is only for using the internet! Both of which gave me so much grief and am not sad to see them go!!!

Shall I pour?

Sorry to hear about your XP problems. Odd thing though, the only person I know with problems also is using a laptop. I have no proof but I think it may be to do with power saving and battery voltage. Whenever his problems arise it's always after a power down after he's left it on battery too long.

jeffmack - 21 Jun 2003 08:44 - 1552 of 23498

I also bought a Toshiba laptop last year with XP. Its been as god as gold for 14 months now. Every PC/Laptop I have had previous I have had to rebuild every 6-9 months. But this laptop and XP have been problem free.

Socrates - 21 Jun 2003 09:52 - 1553 of 23498

Good morning Jeffmack, are you at work again? Up and posting so early in the day can't be good for you. Why are you such a disaster area for computers, I've only had two in ten years, and only got the second one as an upgrde. Only ever had one failure and that was a hard disc went duff.

Sounds like your Toshiba is a good machine though. Our company is currently buying Acer machines. When I was with the MoD they were a recommended supplier and that was on the basis of build standard. Mind you that was ten years ago.

little woman - 21 Jun 2003 10:23 - 1554 of 23498

Morning all,

MOD are currently buying lots of Dells (with Windows Millenium I think?),I've forgotton the version, but I do know Dell don't sell it anymore because it's not compatible with anyone elses hardware! (Many specialist hardware companies actually include a note not to purchase their kit if you are using this particular Dell!)

The MOD always buy stuff that is cheap - and versions normally no longer available to anyone else! I've been using a lot of Military owned different PC's/systems for the last 10ys+ and you should see how much hardware is in the stationery room! (Spares, so when something goes down - which is often, you just swap it and return the orginal to see if they can fix it!)

They have a new system being developed at the moment which is supposed to replace everything else they have (including a UNIX system which has been arround 15-20 years), but they haven't decided the hardware supplier yet. I understand this new one will be XP based.

No work today. Long weekend for me as I had a day off yesterday to play golf. Looking very tanned today so of to the garden to top it up

Good day to ya all what is bloatware (WINDOWS XP)??.

HT.

Socrates - 21 Jun 2003 15:17 - 1557 of 23498

Moat Microsoft programmes are generally termed bloatware. If you think back, right from Windows 5.1 upwards, most MS operating systems and apps have required large increases in disk space. I'm interested to know what space XP requires, I bet it's a big increase on the Windows ME I have at present.

Ouch. I just got bitten by a MACD Histogram!

I'm off to Kempton Wed evening. Let me know Tue/Wed if you fancy anything.

Socrates - 22 Jun 2003 13:06 - 1560 of 23498

I fancy a fresh cream Belgian Bun and a large glass of iced real lemonade!

This_is_me - 22 Jun 2003 18:46 - 1561 of 23498

How could you go to Kempton to see smelly horses when you could watch girls in short skirts with two balls in their hands?

Sorry I missed you last night, I was busy doing the genealogy bit. I did pop in earlier in the evening but there was no one about so I went delving into the past.

Hope you are both well but I have to say I don't like this hot weather. Roll on winter, I say.
