GTL Resources The Alternative Fuel (GTL)

driver - 23 Apr 2006 18:38

Gas to Liquid
Commencement of Operations Started 28/12/2006
The strategy of GTL Resources plc is to produce liquids such as methanol and ethanol from stranded gas, corn and other feedstocks with quality counterparties. GTL manages all aspects of a project: finance, feedstock supply, production and marketing.

In line with its strategy of seeking to develop and exploit markets for alternative fuels, GTL has, since the beginning of 2001, concentrated primarily upon developing methanol projects, principally in Australia, and, more recently, ethanol project work. The Board has recognised the strategic benefits of acquiring a cash generative asset on a shorter time scale than the typical methanol construction time of three years. In furtherance of this strategy, on 6 September 2005 GTL Resources acquired a controlling interest in Illinois River Energy (IRE) to build an ethanol plant at Rochelle, Illinois, through its wholly owned subsidiary, GTL USA, which has been established for the purpose of investing in ethanol projects in the USA. GTL USA has invested in IRE by way of a subscription for units of IRE pursuant to the Unit Purchase Agreement.

This project has the advantage that the Plant is expected to produce revenues on a shorter time scale and at a significantly lower capital cost than the methanol plant in Australia.

The Company intends to further expand within the ethanol industry in the United States or other suitable markets by selective acquisition of low cost production facilities. The Company sees itself as a potential consolidator of ethanol plants in a particularly fragmented market.

FT Tip
GTL Resources, an Aim-listed company. It raised money to build an ethanol plant in the US. Raw materials costs have risen but the price of ethanol has gone through the roof. The earnings potential should be spectacular.

New Plant

Construction started at Rochelle, Illinois site in September and production from the 50 million gallon per annum ethanol plant is expected to commence in the fourth quarter of 2006. Following unusually mild weather in Illinois the project has progressed well and is on schedule and on budget. Whilst the Companys main efforts centre on the successful delivery of the US ethanol project at Rochelle, the potential expansion of that site to 100 million gallons is being investigated. In addition and consistent
with GTLs stated strategy for the expansion of its interests in the ethanol industry, other ethanol opportunities have also been identified and will be analysed. Pictures Of The Site Under Construction March 27, 2006 http://www.illinoisriverenergy.com/html/construction.html

"extraordinary how if one does not go with the herd, one is accused of deramping"

never a truer word spoken, and a fine example of your double standards Mr Cynic!

I believe in repetition for emphasis.

Oh bye the way I tried my growing up, and the maturity thing, during my professional life.

I must say I did not like it, children being, as they are, more honest and less introverted create a much happier environement.

Was not Tony Blair an adult?

I see the 'Thrush' virus is spreading, no doubt claiming to be adding his wisdom to each thread and probably claiming to have bought every rocketing share at the bottom and sold at the top. Typical behaviour from a typical attention seeker desperately craving credibility. What was that you said Cynic re who will rid me of this total tosser? (Paraphrasing just a little)

US Corn At 60-Year Record

By Sally White

Good news for ethanol producers, but bad news for food markets the latest US crop reports show sharp cuts to make room for vastly increased corn plantings. The US Department of Agricultures (USDA) estimate of corn acreage published last Friday was considerably higher than expected, and at the expense of wheat and soya acreage numbers, which show dramatic declines. This bearish news for corn has brought forecasts that it will fall to below US$3 a bushel by harvest time.
At least the increased corn acreage may take some of the pressure off the food v. fuel debate. Ethanol production is still expected to use 14 per cent more of the US corn crop this year, at 30 per cent of the harvest. Higher prices have been squeezing ethanol profits, with producers cash margins shrinking to around US 74 cents a gallon, down from last Junes US$2.41 a gallon, according to JP Morgan Chase.

Meanwhile, the US keeps its foot flat on the boards in increasing mandatory use of ethanol. Last week California said all gasoline will have to be blended with 10 per cent ethanol by 2009.

With 99 per cent of planting done, corn acreage is put at 93.0 million acres, over three per cent higher than the average forecast and 19 percent more than last year. The corn crop this fall is now expected to be around 13 billion bushels, barring weather problems, the highest figures since World War II.

This, and the subsequent rise in stocks, led Chicago Board of Trade contracts down, putting prices at US 98 cents lower than in mid-June, and 62 per cent down on the on the peak price last autumn. September corn closed down US 10 cents at US$3.40 a bushel. On the charts, if weakness continues, the next point is US$3.14. Only the weather, and a sharp increase in Chinese imports, following drought there, can support the price.

Wheat responded to USDA forecasts of lower-than-expected planted acreage and stocks by moving limit up in Chicago. This came against an already bullish background of tight global supplies and unfavourable growing weather in many parts of the world. The Chicago price on Friday for September wheat showed a rise of US30 cents at one stage, before profit-taking left it up US26.75 cent and it closed around US$6.05 in choppy trading.

In London the wheat futures price moved to historic new high levels, and November delivery closed around 117.50 pounds, up from the previous weeks 112.75 a tonne. Traders said bullishness also came from lower EU grain production estimates from the EUs grain trading organisation, Comite du Commerce des Cereales (Coceral). Although the latest forecast is up 1.7 per cent on a year early, it is down by 7.3 million tonnes, at 119 million, at a time when the world needs all the wheat it can get.

The International Grain Council now expects that 2007-8 crops will be significantly down on last year, with pessimism rising almost daily because of the extremes of European weather. Europes weather is being particularly unhelpful this year, with more rain in already sodden France, the UK and Germany, while there is a drought and record high temperatures further east, from Italy, through Greece to the Ukraine.

Greece has said that its grain crop will be down at least 30 per cent, and yields in the Ukraine are estimated to have halved so far this year. Italy has also seen record high temperatures, but there is now rain, which will help improve yields.

Around the other side of the world, Chinas severe drought, which is stretching across the corn and soybean regions, is expected to last at least another week.

Soya prices, however, soared on the USDA estimate of a cut of over 3 million, or 15 per cent, in planted acres, at 67.14 million considerable higher than trade estimates. So, although there was end-quarter profit-taking, August soybeans closed up US 39.50 cents at US$8.55.75. Soybean meal closed up US$10.60 at US$231.20 a tonne, and soybean oil was 105 points higher at US36.91.

i have revived this thread merely as a and out of curiosity ....... not very long ago, GTL was a fave on this BB and volumes were high ...... arguably, though i have my doubts, most saw the error of their ways and cut their losses ...... the stock has continued to slide and is now barely half of what it was a year ago, and volumes have dried to a trickle.

DOO (qv) makes an interesting comparison ...... though performance of late has been pretty dismal, i would be (unpleasantly) surprised if their figures later this month do not provide a fillip.

G D Potts - 19 Sep 2007 15:36 - 1584 of 1690

Sold out a while ago. Ethanol is the new oil! as in its negative association with the environment.

D1 should be higher and will be so im happy to hold.

hlyeo98 - 19 Sep 2007 16:38 - 1585 of 1690

GTL has no hope now.

skyhigh - 20 Sep 2007 13:04 - 1586 of 1690

finally sold out of GTL this morning...gone into HMB instead.. HMB should at least double so that I recoup the GTL losses (imho)

seawallwalker - 01 Oct 2007 07:22 - 1587 of 1690

Well, bad luck all here.

Having seen the light before the share consolidation, I feel for once inspired.

Oh yes I did take a loss and am happy to have done so.

cynic - 01 Oct 2007 08:04 - 1588 of 1690

SWW was spot on re sp tumbling, though i am not convinced that his logic was correct ...... for myself, i sold up in March and, as so often, got castigated for reminding everyone why GTL was a dumb investment ...... so who's the dummy now?

seawallwalker - 01 Oct 2007 08:14 - 1589 of 1690

Morning cynic.

Matter not how I got there if the result is the same.

Well that's what I think anyway.

Fancy a little of TRP?

Answer me over there.

I have to admit a bit of a defeat on this one short term but Im sure it will come good when the revenue increases and the profit starts rolling in.

Having said that I greatly reduced at 155p at a loss may return when it picks up.

cynic - 01 Oct 2007 14:19 - 1591 of 1690

so m8, but i reckon you're nuts to keep holding this one .... even DOO, which has a much better chance of success, is struggling at the mo
