rather than pick out individual stocks to trade, it can often be worthwhile to trade the indices themselves, especially in times of high volatility.
for those so inclined, i attach below charts for FTSE and FTSE 250, though one might equally be tempted to trade Dow or S&P, which is significantly broader in its coverage, or even NASDAQ
for ease of reading, i have attached 1 year and 3 month charts in each instance

Quite the opposite Cynic, she used to take an interest but isn't cut out for taking financial risks and used to worry and never quite got her head round it. Its far easier for her to understand that I will not put us at financial risk and only gamble what I can afford to lose.

Have some cash, bullion bars/coins are also good, jewellery and antiques. Simple assets that aren't on the register that should you require you can later cash in.

Earnings and economic data: The Labor Department said 312,000 Americans filed for unemployment benefits last week, up from 304,000 the week before.
But Wall Street is already looking ahead to Friday's all-important jobs report, which economists surveyed by CNNMoney predict will show the U.S. added 200,000 jobs in May. The unemployment rate is expected to tick up to 6.4%.
