For some reason I've always had a problem defragging - if I leave the setting to re-order files and check drive for errors, it never gets past 2%. It's taken forever just to re-order the files. Now I have the setting purely on checking for errors, it still won't get past 2%. Can anyone enlighten me please, preferably in words of one syllable?

Are you defragging Win 98 or something else?

I found this:
"If you have been trying to defrag your system, but it won't get past 1% or 2% complete, you should check to make sure that your Virus protection software is turned off.
Virus protection software will make your defrag constantly reset when it changes the drive or files on the drive."

Doc is right some of the programmes running in the back ground stop defrag in its tracks and it is sometimes not that obvious what they are.
One way is to press Ctrl+Alt/Delete and you should get task manager window up which shows you what is running.
Before running defrag close down most of the programmes running.
When I say most some of the tasks will be system programmes which either wont close or if you do will stop you seeing task bar etc but you can always reboot and try again.

Thanks M - you're right about the prgrammes, trouble is, whilst I can recognise most of the ones to close, others I don't have a clue about. I've never even got to the bottom of why I have things like Eudora and Iware running. I'll wait for him-who-knows-more-than-I to get home and...no doubt you'll hear me squeak again :)

I understand that you know your place and will get on with the house work instead. Then again you could say sod that I am going to close them down and see what happens. Worse case is you reboot :)

Sod that was definitely the case, M. *If in doubt, go and have a soak* is what I said. Now I'm going to close *them* down (if only I knew what I was doing..) ;)

Midaz, don't know if this will help, but my Dell laptop did the same, then I got a virus and had to reformat the hard drive and reinstall windows (98), and since then it's run well, fan only coming on when it gets really hot. Don't know why this worked though!!

Looking on the bright side, an achievement of 3% is 50% more than I managed last time.. :) The only programmes left running were Eboard, Gsicon, Loadqm, Wkcalrem, Systray and Dslagent. Explorer was an obstinate little bugger - it kept invoking me to shut down...
