Birmingham uses Websense
Tags: Foundation Trust Information iS Security Web 2.0
11 Sep 2009
University Hospitals Birmingham NHS Foundation Trust has announced that it will implement a complete information protection solution from Websense.
The trust will roll-out Websenses Essential Information Protection portfolio to create an integrated policy-based IT security platform to secure data and protect against Web 2.0 threats from sites such as Twitter.
The solution, which was purchased for an undisclosed six figure sum, will cover 7,500 users for three years.
Mohandeep Randhawa, service delivery manager at the trust, said: We recognised that, with the rise of Web 2.0, the threat landscape had changed.
"We needed a security platform that would not only protect against ongoing internet threats but also help us to identify where our valuable information existed, set policy over who had access to that information and what they could do with it.
The trust believes the solution will drive down operational costs because of reduced complexity and training requirements. "Were already seeing reduced administration, improved correlation and better management reporting, Randhawa added.
The solution is powered by the Websense Threat Seeker Network, which continuously monitors the internet for changes and emerging threats. Information is then incorporated in real-time into the companys web, data and email security solutions.

"What we don't want is a big file of documents that you're not sure who they're from or what they're about, because that makes life difficult, and also opens you up to a legal challenge where you might have missed some buried information," said Dr Ingrams.

"It's got to be in a standard order and searchable. But they haven't got that far in deciding that."
Dr Mary Hawking, a GP in Bedfordshire who has in the past been critical of the way the programme has been managed, said she too was concerned about the "mission creep" of other documents and records being added to the SCRs.
"The danger is that while information on allergies and medication is useful, you can upload all sorts of rubbish along the way, things that patients didn't want on there," she said.

"Suppose you have a mental health problem, or were abused as a child. You don't necessarily want information freely out there when you're admitted to A&E for an unrelated accident."
There were also "many issues" over data quality, with many surgeries not having accredited data, she said. In March, the NHS ended the need for data accreditation.
Helen Wilkinson, a former employee of the NHS and founder of the Big Opt Out Campaign, agreed that the concerns over data quality were "huge" and that the lack of accreditation of many GP surgeries was a worry.
"I started the campaign after discovering that thanks to a coding error I'd been wrongly labelled on the system as an alcoholic," she said. "My MP had to get a debate in parliament to have the record changed."
"Now I get patients in early adopter sites, and GP surgeries, ringing me. Because many don't know what the programme's about."
Asked whether it would be useful to have a standard national framework setting exactly what can be uploaded and in what format, Dr Hawking said it would. "Look at the Welsh programme," she said. "They made it completely clear there are to be no uploads on mental health and sexual health."
"The big problem is that as a patient, if you don't opt out, you're automatically consenting to all sorts of information beng added in the future, and we don't know what it is or the quality of it."
Dr Hawking called for the NHS to have "more discussion" with GPs and patients, and "less going ahead without their engagement".
The NHS today insisted that the SCRs in early adopter areas were demonstrably improving care, and defended the continued automatic opt-in of patients.
"An opt-in model is likely to disadvantage those elderly or chronically ill who do not take the initiative to ask for a Summary Care Record," it said. "This would mean that those most likely to benefit from clinicians being able to access key information in unscheduled care situations are less likely to have this improvement in their patient care."
Health minister Mike O'Brien added: "Having the right information at the right time can make all the difference to patients' experience of urgent care.

Websense's current clients include more than half of the Fortune 500 companies, the United States Army and Saudi Aramco, the large Saudi oil company. Other software that Saudi Arabia has considered includes products from Surf Control, a London company; N2H2, of Seattle; and Symantec, a Cupertino, Calif., company.
Within the Islamic world, religious sensitivities and security-conscious regimes can combine to create a technophobic atmosphere. Governments in Muslim nations, among them Pakistan and the United Arab Emirates, have made overtures to Internet filtering companies. But no Muslim nation has been as active a user of the software as has Saudi Arabia. By royal decree, virtually all public Internet traffic to and from Saudi Arabia has been funneled through a single control center outside Riyadh since the Internet was introduced in the kingdom nearly three years ago.
If the Riyadh center blocks a site, a warning screen pops up warning the user, in English and Arabic, "Access to the requested URL is not allowed!"
"The Internet is a frightening place to some people," said Mr. Holt, who oversees sales operations in the Middle East for Secure Computing. "The government feels the need to intervene."

Accounting Firm Caps Spam and Risky Email With Websense "In the Cloud" Email Security

Technology Integration Group (TIG) Helps Smith Marion & Co. Eradicate Spam With Websense Hosted Email Security
For mid-sized accounting firm Smith Marion & Co., which provides audit services, tax preparation and accounting and consulting services, pesky and risky spam was consuming countless hours for employees -- hours better spent on providing services to their customers. After its trusted IT solution provider Technology Integration Group suggested Websense Hosted Email Security from Websense, Smith Marion & Co. has saved both time and money.
"Spam was time consuming for our employees as they had to wade through tons of spam in their inboxes," said Daniel Gregory, IT manager, Smith Marion & Co. "Employees didn't want to see the massive amount of inappropriate email. After we deployed the on-demand security service from Websense, we reduced spam, saved time and employees no longer had to deal with inappropriate images and content."
"Hosted services are quickly becoming an attractive platform of choice in the messaging security market," said Brian Burke, security program director for IDC. "This hosted, software-as-a-service security model represents a great opportunity to deliver multi-tier protection from security threats with reduced deployment and management time."
"Deployment was easy," added Gregory. "We rolled out the solution in less than an hour. Administration and management of the system is extremely easy and intuitive. While we haven't had to call on them much, we've experienced great levels of support both through our solution provider and through Websense technical support."
"Our client needed a proven security solution that would stop spam and bolster security," said Steve Groom, senior director of Security & Wireless, Technology Integration Group. "With the Websense cloud-based email security solution, we've been able to eradicate spam while protecting our client against viruses, phishing and other malware. Websense Hosted Email Security also keeps essential information from leaving the organization by encrypting and protecting outbound sensitive email."
"Smith Marion & Co. understands the value of hosted security solutions -- an effective option that delivers maximum protection without the need for hardware upkeep and management," said Leo Cole, vice president of marketing at Websense. "We believe this hosted security model can benefit businesses of all sizes and let them focus on their business without having to spend valuable resources on security."
In addition to Websense Hosted Email Security, the company offers Websense Hosted Web Security that protects from malware, delivers granular Web filtering, and provides centralized policy management for any type of environment, including those with remote locations, home offices and mobile laptops.
IDC's Burke expects the hosted email and Web security market will grow from $492.3 million in 2007, to $1.7 billion in 2012, representing a compound annual growth rate of 33.8 percent.
All Websense solutions, including Websense Hosted Email Security, are powered by the Websense ThreatSeeker Network which continuously monitors the Internet for changes and emerging threats. The resulting intelligence is immediately incorporated into the company's Web, data and email security solutions. As a result, Websense solutions adapt to the rapidly changing Internet threat environment at speeds not possible by traditional security solutions.

an expert has told me that Resilience's stuff is better than Cisco's. Plus cost in recessionary times can be critical for a large Company or Health Authority. Tendering will look at quality, but also cost. Outsourcing to Nexus/Resilience with remote monitoring, communications facilities, and data backup to Brunswick, Maine, and saving money into the bargain on what had previously been in-house IT support, could be a deal hard to resist on logical grounds. A large multi-national company recently has reported saving over 70% in their phonebills.

I take you point about data protection with regard to government agencies' information, especially personal sensitive data like health, sexual life, and religious affliation, which required express written permission of the client for it to be stored with some exception like lawyers and doctors where there is a privilege or dispensation from the general law.
However, I would not rule out completely the possibility of Nexus (with or without Resilience's products) winning new business. There is more than simply software and hardware to a bid. Current client base and their recommendations could sway things in Nexus's favour, particularly if the current provider of ITC support is not giving good service or is much more expensive than Nexus. Cost cutting in the current economic climate, even with Government agencies given all the current debt mountain to get rid of, must high on the agenda in every board room.
Don't underestimate Nexus.... Watch this space.

GECR NOTE 3.75P Nexus Management to launch Nerd Force franchise in UK
company news image
Nexus Management PLC (AIM: NXS) said it entered into a partnership with Les Dyson of First for Franchising to launch its mobile computer and technology support unit Nerd Force in the UK.
Dyson has more than 20 years' experience launching new franchises in and with his help the company is confident of Nerd Force's successful entry into the UK market, it said in a statement.
Les Dyson commented: I firmly believe that we will establish a considerable presence throughout the UK during the next year, having already created a credible foundation stone during the balance of 2009.
Updating on Resilience Technology Corp, which it acquired in March 2009, Nexus said the business has made substantial progress.
Nexus CEO Roger Richardson said: Much has been achieved in a few short months by the Resilience team. I am pleased to be able to confirm sales of the Resilience products continue in line with the board's expectations and will play an important role in the company's performance this fiscal year.
Following the news, Growth Equities & Company Research reiterated its 'buy' recommendation for Nexus Management with a price target of 3.75p, more than 3 times its current share price.
The launch of Nerd Force in the UK with such a safe pair of hands will not only reassure investors that this is a globally scaleable model but should have a bottom line impact from next year (to September 30 2010) onwards. The news on trading at Resilience is most encouraging and underpins our earnings forecasts," GE & CR added.

On 25th August Nexus announced that it had completed a 0.4 million placing and provided a trading update that offers real comfort that our current year expectations remain deliverable. We have reduced our target price from 3.75p to 3.21p to reflect the increased number of shares in issue but, at 0.92p, reiterate our stance of buy.
Nexus successfully placed 40 million new shares at 1p each raising 380,000 net of expenses and granted accompanying options over a further 20 million shares, exercisable at 1p per share at any time before 25th February 2011. The proceeds are for general working capital requirements and the repayment of outstanding Resilience acquisition loan notes.
In terms of trading, the update for the 9 months to 30th June suggests that our expectations for the current year will be met as Nexus anticipates Resilience and Nerd Force closing a number of contracts in the next few weeks. However, the evolving shape of the Nexus, especially following the Resilience acquisition, has made the companys revenue streams somewhat less predictable than has previously been the case.
Nexus core business has continued to cope with reduced spending from its existing customers by managing its operating costs and although it is still early days, Resilience continues to make steady progress though the timing of large contracts completions and new product introductions influences financial performance. Nerd Force has sold in excess 180 franchise territories, of which 27 are currently active; a slower conversion rate that originally anticipated due to the severity of the US recession. Nevertheless, it remains one of the fastest growing franchises. PD Financial, the e-tailer associate, remains somewhat subdued because of the recession but the business is making headway with its refinancing, which, if successful, will result in a repayment of indebtedness to Nexus.
We continue to value Nexus on a sum of the parts basis. The monies owed to Nexus by PD Financial and the balance sheet valuation of the shares owned in PD Financial are worth 4.057 million or 0.41p per share and we remain convinced that once the US economy recovers this business will show its true potential. We value the core earnings stream on 10 times September 2011 forecast earnings, which we do not believe to be overly demanding for a company expected to increase earnings almost 6-fold over the next two years. We continue to recommend the shares as a buy at 0.92p with a revised 2011 target price of 3.21p.

RUMOURED utility contract annnouncement 2morrow at t1ps one 2 one RESILIENCE LAUNCHES NEW SECURITY PRODUCT
11 August 2009
NEW LOW COST HIGH SECURITY PRODUCT LAUNCH FOR RESILIENCE
Nexus Management's wholly owned subsidiary, Resilience Technology Corp
("Resilience"), is pleased to announce the launch of its new security product, the '9100 Small Appliance for High Security Requirements'. This appliance allows organisations to ensure high levels of security, compliant with corporate standards, but at a much lower cost compared to products and solutions currently available in the market.
Companies, including banks, power utilities and retailers have increasingly
higher critical security needs at the end points of their networks. To date, the costs of extending corporate level security standards across a Customer's network have been significant and in many cases prohibitive. Examples of such end points include ATM's (Automated Teller Machines), which, to achieve the required levels of security, currently have to use expensive lease lines, and retail outlets who typically require lower cost solutions. These customers have helped Resilience define the latest extension of our security appliance family, the 9100 Small Appliance for High Security Requirements.
Now customers can choose to run a full firewall license, Websense v7 content filtering, or other Linux-based security applications, in a small low cost unit, providing high levels of performance and guaranteed uptime. The 9100 allows customers, many of whom are undertaking cost saving initiatives, to extend their standard corporate security products and policies to the remote areas of their networks.
Sean Scott, CEO of Resilience, commented: "With the release of the 9100 Small Security Appliance customers can extend their standard corporate security platform anywhere on the planet in a plug and play secure platform. Our standards based approach to purpose built, security appliances helps service providers by delivering feature rich, cutting edge solutions, faster and at lower costs than the competition."
Roger Richardson, CEO of Nexus Management, commented: "'The 9100 Small Appliance for High Security Requirements' is an expansion of the portfolio of performance solutions offered by Resilience. Our product range is designed for network environments where availability is essential and security must not be compromised - reliability and security are synonymous with the brand name and highly valued by our customers."
FASTER AND AT LOWER COST THAN THE COMPETITION
