FTSE + FTSE 250 - consider trading (FTSE)

cynic - 20 Oct 2007 12:12

rather than pick out individual stocks to trade, it can often be worthwhile to trade the indices themselves, especially in times of high volatility.

for those so inclined, i attach below charts for FTSE and FTSE 250, though one might equally be tempted to trade Dow or S&P, which is significantly broader in its coverage, or even NASDAQ

for ease of reading, i have attached 1 year and 3 month charts in each instance

i'm out fully too, but a rather more painfully as i was out to dinner when the bottom fell out :-(

Rocky - 06 Aug 2014 10:43 - 16167 of 21973

Stopped out of DOW short last night for +76. Where to today?

skinny - 06 Aug 2014 10:55 - 16168 of 21973

I'm long FTSE @6610.1.

S3 was 6605.03 (low stamped 6606.16).

Shortie - 06 Aug 2014 10:56 - 16169 of 21973

debating a long FTSE position myself

skinny - 06 Aug 2014 11:34 - 16170 of 21973

Added @6596.1.

cynic - 06 Aug 2014 11:39 - 16171 of 21973

looks quite brave as the market is almost in freefall

Shortie - 06 Aug 2014 13:45 - 16173 of 21973

DAX 9050 closed at 9073.8 for +23.8.. One position from yesterday remaining.

skinny - 06 Aug 2014 15:08 - 16174 of 21973

Closed 6596.1 @6628.1 +32

Edited!

cynic - 06 Aug 2014 15:31 - 16175 of 21973

quite surprised you closed out, but well done
did you mean the numbers you quoted? .... you can't mean 6528 as ftse never dropped anything like that low

meanwhile, dow is having a tentative attempt at a rally, though whether it will last the day remains to be seen.
mind you, that index has dumped an awful lot and the greed/fear is set at 5 (extreme fear in the extreme!), so perhaps at least a sharp bounce is on the cards ..... even so, we're still a long way short of a key hurdle of 16550

cynic - 06 Aug 2014 16:08 - 16176 of 21973

ah well; just recouped a good slab of my dow loss of last night
arguably got out a bit early at 16470, but index was looking to be struggling a little
shall now wait to see what happens as 16500 approaches, as there may be a chance for a quick short trade at that juncture

Rocky - 06 Aug 2014 16:15 - 16177 of 21973

Small short DOW @ 16475
P.S. Well done Skinny

skinny - 06 Aug 2014 16:24 - 16178 of 21973

cynic - now edited - still long from 6610.1.

Thanks Rocky.

Rocky - 06 Aug 2014 17:02 - 16179 of 21973

Stopped out +11

cynic - 07 Aug 2014 10:26 - 16180 of 21973

left a very small dow long running o'night with a limit at 16480 which it was nice to see got hit for +36 ..... a very modest profit in cash terms but better than a similar loss

it's well worth noting that dow has peeked at 16500 several times over the last 24 hours and each time it has retreated

Rocky - 07 Aug 2014 13:58 - 16181 of 21973

Spot on Cynic, There she goes again!

cynic - 07 Aug 2014 14:00 - 16182 of 21973

quite so ..... not exactly worrying, but it would be healthier if 16500 was breached and stayed that way, and more particularly, 16555

cynic - 07 Aug 2014 14:29 - 16183 of 21973

what were US jobless figures like?
