..Families spending more on petrol than food, says AA

Many families are spending more on fuel than their weekly food shopping because of record petrol prices, the AA has found.

The motoring group said prices at the pump hit a new high of 142.48p per litre this week, while diesel remains near its peak of 147.88p per litre.

These new figures mean the cost of filling up a 50-litre family car is around £71.24 at a time when many households are struggling with their budgets.

This is slightly more than the £70.10 spent by an average household with two children on food and non-alcoholic drinks per week.

For a family with two cars, it is now £22 more expensive to top up with petrol than it was at the beginning of the year.

Petrol prices have been high since the threat of a strike by tanker drivers began last month.

Drivers queued at the pumps, even though the strike never happened, leading people to stretch their spending on petrol.

Edmund King, president of the AA, said household budgets had been put under “intolerable strain” by the panic about a possible strike over Easter.

“Panic buying in March forced some cash-strapped families to spend far more on fuel than their budgets could bear,” Mr King said. “Filling up a 50-litre tank costs more than some families spend on food each week."

Tanker drivers last night failed to reach an agreement with their bosses in their dispute over working conditions, raising fears of another rush for petrol. However, the unions insisted a deal may still be in reach.

"It is very clear that, at this point, we are not on strike, we have not announced that we are going on strike," their union representative said.

Petrol prices have remained stubbornly high, despite the lack of a strike and falling oil prices on the financial markets.

The worst affected areas are Northern Ireland, where the average price of petrol has hit 143.9p per litre, and Wales at 142.9p per litre. Yorkshire and Scotland are the cheapest places at around 142.2p per litre.

The AA blamed “stock market speculators” for manipulating prices. The group called on the Government to “address the destructive tendencies in the oil and road fuel markets”.

Better go and have my shower before they are taxed. lol

It was an empty road, so only risking my life. The current speed limits are too slow. I would have gone faster, but the car was at its limit.
