I am still the buy and hold investor as looking at the spread on spread bets the SP has to move quite a way to make a 1000 at say 20 a point-I'd rather st and wait I think. Shame as I've just seen a dream house and I really would like to magic up 800k next week! well --I can dream can't I? maybe SEO will gallop ahead next week.

Fred1new - 20 Feb 2005 18:35 - 1635 of 27111

Have similar feelings.

Hesitate to say it because of the pride cometh before a fall but 600%+ up via CFDs. Haven't set out to trade the share but rather run the profits. I did have to close a position when the price came back and was lucky to get back in somewhat lower as a result of the NLR run - this is the risk side of that route as you can be forced to close positions very quickly if you have reinvested the margin.

mp: how has the spreadbet compared in % terms? Essentially, the CFD % comes directly from the 4:1 gearing. You could state the result higher than that as one position was the reinvestment of the margin so not new funds. Lovely while it lasts!

"Seen me off"
Why would you want to do that?

moneyplus - 21 Feb 2005 01:04 - 1640 of 27111

Don't forget Eric that CFDs are subject to CGT and that takes the shine off-but spreadbets are tax free, Even so well done 600% return is fantastic keep it up!

markusantonius - 21 Feb 2005 02:05 - 1641 of 27111

Moneyplus,

My mate tried to place a spread bet on SEO last week only to be told that they were refusing all bets on it for the forseeable future. I think they were 14p-ish at the time. Tax advantages - yes. But the spreads are massive and there is always the chance of an intra-day mega-dip - and even if only for a few moments - this can result in a closed position (say if it reaches your stop-loss) in a blink of the eye! A CFD carries more visibility with the spread and a 30% margin with SEO [presume this is the margin here, Eric?] would act as a reasonable buffer, I think.

cc - Trust I've explained this correctly, Eric?

Regardless - Stanelco looks good for the long term whether it be a wager, a CFD or an old fashioned punt.....!

Kus.

good morning all. blue. all week. blue. thats my predictaion. we have had the dip last week, and possibly found a support level,(filthypoor, still waiting for 6.5p?) and now we should stay nice and steady to the prelims.

Hi everyone, been following this thread for a couple of weeks now and have invested a few bob on the strength of your research and comments. I would like to thank all for their posts which have been very informative for a beginner like me. Glad to see that we have got over the nasty bits from last week and can now look forward to a positive thread continuing. Thanks again.

Results due next week so keep an eye on sp, not sure which way the sp will go but if they manage to tie in some information regarding trial with Asda then this might protect sp as I don't think the results will be that positive...

Dynamite - 21 Feb 2005 11:38 - 1650 of 27111

Adie...the results may well be negative but I have restructured my portfolio and I am now happy with my holding to the extent that I will just buy on weakness as I expect next week, if it doesn't happen that is great too ;-)

Happy with my little holding, will try to top up if the sp does fall after results, if it does like you I believe it will be short lived, 20p here we come...
