Leaked figures obtained by the Labour Party reveal that around 880 officers (10%) have been cut from the UK Border Force since 2010.

A further 1,550 officer posts could go by 2014/15, the BBC understands.

Shadow home office minister Yvette Cooper said ministers were being complacent over the level of chaos at Heathrow airport border control.

Immigration Minister Damian Green said 80 extra staff were being drafted in to cut queues, among other measures.

Point taken, but this was all above board. It prompted a flurry of blood donations and highlighted a need for constant donations, people queued to give blood afterwards. Locally of course, but there is always a need.

Standpipes could be needed in the streets next year if England endures another dry winter, the environment secretary has suggested.

We are flooding in the SE at the moment. Trouble is its all running off and not sinking below ground. I think Wales has a plot and changed the weather and stolen all our rain fall. :-))

It is a cunning plot.

Unknown assailants kill six at Cairo protest

Unknown assailants have killed at least six people at a protest against Egypt's ruling generals near the defence ministry in Cairo, officials say.

Witnesses described how the attackers set on them at dawn using rocks, clubs, firebombs and firing shotguns.

Up to 100 people were also reportedly injured and are being treated at a field clinic in the Abbasiya district.

British Council heritage films put online


More than 120 short films offering "snapshots of the UK's cultural, sporting, industrial and political heritage" have been put online.

The documentaries from the British Council's archive date back to 1939, when the Council commissioned the films to showcase Britain to the world.

Topics included health care, the legal system, Shakespeare and how the Times was produced each day.
