rather than pick out individual stocks to trade, it can often be worthwhile to trade the indices themselves, especially in times of high volatility.
for those so inclined, i attach below charts for FTSE and FTSE 250, though one might equally be tempted to trade Dow or S&P, which is significantly broader in its coverage, or even NASDAQ
for ease of reading, i have attached 1 year and 3 month charts in each instance

The powers that be have a free hand today to walk shares down - with the holidays & lack of any major economic news scheduled - having said that, the FTSE is nearly +100 from its overnight lows.

LONDON (MarketWatch) -- U.S. stock markets are open for trade on Monday, but bond markets are closed for the Columbus Day holiday. Trading in energy and metals futures is also business as usual. The next holiday for U.S. stock markets is Thanksgiving on Nov. 27. On Monday, however, Canadian stocks were closed for trade in observance of the local Thanksgiving Day. Japanese markets were also closed for a holiday.
