Priscilla,
Sorry for delayed reply, had to go and do lunch. New format DVD may or may not take off, rumour is there is already another on the way which is better.......go figure!
In this weather DVD beats food every time, good hunting!

Socrates - 23 Oct 2004 15:28 - 16733 of 23498

lw
The big "C" is of course Cheltenham, and it is still precipitating with some malevolence. Done the antique fair, very nice it was too. Somebody here used to collect carriage clocks with alarms, nice one at the fair, only 5500. Obviously a snip.

I'll go downmarket for lunch, a spot of Spag Bol will do nicely.

Spaceman - 23 Oct 2004 16:08 - 16734 of 23498

Weather crap in Hastings as well, I eneded up going to bed at 0200 last night then spent about 3 hours listening to the wind and rain, managed to get up at 11)) this morning!

P and S do you mean Blue Ray as the new format for DVD? If so I would not delay buying a DVD player depending on that, the current DVD format will be here for a while and the players can be bought for about 40+. I would buy one anyway.

chocolat - 23 Oct 2004 16:22 - 16735 of 23498

Weather's crap here too - just trying to chivvy myself into venturing out again, still not dried out from yesterday.

STORMCALLER - 23 Oct 2004 16:32 - 16736 of 23498

chocolat,
If you are venturing out again, may I offer a stiff brandy to fortify you, and who knows it may put you off the silly idea entirely and you could stay and relax...

STORMCALLER - 23 Oct 2004 16:34 - 16737 of 23498

Spaceman,
I believe you have hit the nail on the head, couldn't remember the name, and I am not entirely convinced it will be long lived anyway...

chocolat - 23 Oct 2004 16:52 - 16738 of 23498

Thanks Stormie, but I'm firmly attached to water today.

jj50 - 23 Oct 2004 16:58 - 16739 of 23498

Chocolat, why water today....now I feel guilty (she said pouring a glass of Cab Sauv.) .... it is the week-end isn't it?

Well we have had sunshine all day and it still shining through the trees but I think we are having tomorrow what you have today, so shall "batten down the hatches" or whatever the saying is!

Is the difference with the expensive DVD as opposed to the cheapos, that you can record on them in the same way as a VCR? I just have bog standard but it is much appreciated!

Socs, I assume you don't need a DVD as you are sitting admiring the new carriage clock.

Evening Stormie and Spaceman ........

STORMCALLER - 23 Oct 2004 17:05 - 16740 of 23498

jj50,
Good evening, pleased you have had a nice day, weatherwise, thought you might have shared some though....
chocolat,
You set us a fine example....not sure we will live up to it....lol

jeffmack - 23 Oct 2004 17:38 - 16741 of 23498

Evening all
Just been installing Norton Internet Security 2005. Bargain 25 at PC World, half price. Didnt work properly first time as my previous Norton 2003 seemed to upset it. De-installed everything and worked second time.

STORMCALLER - 23 Oct 2004 17:47 - 16742 of 23498

jeffmack,
Good evening, have sent internal message.........Guinness?

jeffmack - 23 Oct 2004 17:48 - 16743 of 23498

Stormy
Guinness would be great. I never get the MAM mail delivered. Try jeff @jeffmack.co.uk

STORMCALLER - 23 Oct 2004 17:51 - 16744 of 23498

jeffamck,
Coming right up........and er coming up in a minute..

Spaceman - 23 Oct 2004 17:59 - 16745 of 23498

jj50, Expensive DVD's can have much better sound and pictures but I also think most people would not notice most of the time. I have a 900 player thats about 3 years old but when I replace it I wont pay anything like that, I wont buy the cheapest either. Recording DVD's tend to be more than the cheapest player only machines but there is a big crossover in price. I suggest a quick look in one of the mags at WH Smiths to find out what they recommend.

jeff not sure I would agree that 25 is good for norton, I would want 25 to install it but then I am not a fan of that product ;-)

STORMCALLER - 23 Oct 2004 18:00 - 16746 of 23498

jeffmack,
Duly despatched (without space?)

STORMCALLER - 23 Oct 2004 18:02 - 16747 of 23498

Spaceman,
Ever on the lookout for info, what would you recommend in preference to Norton?

Spaceman - 23 Oct 2004 18:11 - 16748 of 23498

Stormcaller, normally norton products are OK but there seem to be a lot of problems with the current version, its slow and seems to hang more that it should. I am a bit of a rebel regarding PC security but I have worked in IT for 25 years so I like to think I know what I am doing ;-) I use a router as a firewall and the free AVG virus scanner, in addition I used Adaware and Spybot search and destroy for spyware detection and removal bot of them are free as well. If you must have a software firewall Zonealarm seems pretty good.

If you are using XP the SP2 firewall seems OK to me, I know there are reports that say otherwise but you need to balance what they say with the risk, most home users are not likely to be badly atacked, if you are usisng ADSL with NAT you are not at great risk, in my opinion if you are using ADSL with NAT and a router you do not need anything else.

jeffmack - 23 Oct 2004 18:21 - 16749 of 23498

Spaceman
Got all of those, Wireless router woth firewall, Spybot, Adaware, XP2 firewall and now Norton.

We will fight them on the beaches and all that

STORMCALLER - 23 Oct 2004 18:33 - 16750 of 23498

Spaceman,
Thank you for all that info, I still harbour an ambition to get a new pc with a router, I shall take good note of the advice.
jeffamck,
Does your pc take long to boot......lol

Spaceman - 23 Oct 2004 18:35 - 16751 of 23498

jeff, I hope its all chained to the wall ;-)

Storm, ADSL routers are pretty cheap now from about 35.
