jj50, Expensive DVD's can have much better sound and pictures but I also think most people would not notice most of the time. I have a 900 player thats about 3 years old but when I replace it I wont pay anything like that, I wont buy the cheapest either. Recording DVD's tend to be more than the cheapest player only machines but there is a big crossover in price. I suggest a quick look in one of the mags at WH Smiths to find out what they recommend.

jeff not sure I would agree that 25 is good for norton, I would want 25 to install it but then I am not a fan of that product ;-)

STORMCALLER - 23 Oct 2004 18:00 - 16746 of 23498

jeffmack,
Duly despatched (without space?)

STORMCALLER - 23 Oct 2004 18:02 - 16747 of 23498

Spaceman,
Ever on the lookout for info, what would you recommend in preference to Norton?

Spaceman - 23 Oct 2004 18:11 - 16748 of 23498

Stormcaller, normally norton products are OK but there seem to be a lot of problems with the current version, its slow and seems to hang more that it should. I am a bit of a rebel regarding PC security but I have worked in IT for 25 years so I like to think I know what I am doing ;-) I use a router as a firewall and the free AVG virus scanner, in addition I used Adaware and Spybot search and destroy for spyware detection and removal bot of them are free as well. If you must have a software firewall Zonealarm seems pretty good.

If you are using XP the SP2 firewall seems OK to me, I know there are reports that say otherwise but you need to balance what they say with the risk, most home users are not likely to be badly atacked, if you are usisng ADSL with NAT you are not at great risk, in my opinion if you are using ADSL with NAT and a router you do not need anything else.

jeffmack - 23 Oct 2004 18:21 - 16749 of 23498

Spaceman
Got all of those, Wireless router woth firewall, Spybot, Adaware, XP2 firewall and now Norton.

We will fight them on the beaches and all that

STORMCALLER - 23 Oct 2004 18:33 - 16750 of 23498

Spaceman,
Thank you for all that info, I still harbour an ambition to get a new pc with a router, I shall take good note of the advice.
jeffamck,
Does your pc take long to boot......lol

Spaceman - 23 Oct 2004 18:35 - 16751 of 23498

jeff, I hope its all chained to the wall ;-)

Storm, ADSL routers are pretty cheap now from about 35.

STORMCALLER - 23 Oct 2004 18:43 - 16752 of 23498

Spaceman,
I understood they had fallen in price, though not that far! I aim to get wire type rather than wireless as I believe they are easier to set up.

chocolat - 23 Oct 2004 18:49 - 16753 of 23498

Well I'm back - that little flurry didn't last long!
All this stuff about protection - just realised I haven't updated spywareblaster in a while - oops - should I have it set on auto-update?

STORMCALLER - 23 Oct 2004 18:52 - 16754 of 23498

Well if that don't beat all!!
I have just been disturbed by two "Trick or Treaters" a small girl and boy
I'll pass the fact that they are on the wrong continent !
I'll pass the fact that they are over a week early !

But I find it F**KING UNBELIEVABLE that parents should allow there offspring to go out in the pissing rain, after dark, visiting strangers houses in an area replete with woodlands, where attacks on girls are not uncommon.

ABSOLUTELY CRIMINAL!

STORMCALLER - 23 Oct 2004 19:13 - 16755 of 23498

chocolat,
Glass of mineral water ready and waiting (brandy is under the chair if you weaken)

Socrates - 23 Oct 2004 19:47 - 16756 of 23498

jj50
I just can't imagine myself spending that amount of dosh on a clock. I just pointed it out because someone in the cafe collects them, can't remember who, senior moment I'm afraid.

jeffmack - 23 Oct 2004 19:52 - 16757 of 23498

Socs
I think it goes back to when I bought an old French clock on ebay. Little Willie used to be/still is a collector

Socrates - 23 Oct 2004 20:12 - 16758 of 23498

Jeff
I think you are right, I think it is lw.

optomistic - 23 Oct 2004 20:30 - 16759 of 23498

Did I hear Stormy say something about brandy under a chair? Aaah I see it pass me a glass please, been one of those hectic days that would qualify for brandy. That's if there is enough for me as well as Choccie.

STORMCALLER - 23 Oct 2004 20:35 - 16760 of 23498

opto,
Come now, when have I ever run out.....it's on the bar waiting!

optomistic - 23 Oct 2004 20:41 - 16761 of 23498

Agreed, never known to run out of anything here, best tea rooms in the country. I'll pop another log on the fire, so cosy.

chocolat - 23 Oct 2004 20:48 - 16762 of 23498

Brandy, cheers - I'll just pop some fizz into that.
I was zapping the machine earlier - ended up not being able to re-connect, which was a puzzle - had probs last week too, after 2 hours on the phone, tech support finally realised it was an MSO issue, which was nice.

STORMCALLER - 23 Oct 2004 21:08 - 16763 of 23498

chocolat,
Fizz, any chance I might help you with that, parched after serving this lot....lol

Spaceman - 23 Oct 2004 21:39 - 16764 of 23498
