Henry to sign new Arsenal contract - report

19/05/2006 07:38

SYDNEY (Reuters) - Arsenal striker Thierry Henry is poised to sign a new contract with the Premier League club, media reported on Friday.

The French international had been strongly linked with a move to Barcelona, who beat Arsenal 2-1 in the Champions League final on Wednesday. However, he now appears set to stay in London.

"I hope to stay as long as I can keep running," Henry told The Sun. "I couldnt leave the fans, theyre like family.

Real will sign new players but there is no rush: Sacchi

"I love Barcelona but on Wednesday Arsenal showed they had heart. I hope to finalise details today."

The 28-year-old joined Arsenal from Juventus in 1999 and scored his 200th goal for the London club last season, making him their leading scorer.

He was named English Football Writers player of the year last month, the third time he has won the award.

If Henry does re-sign it will be a huge boost to the club ahead of their move to a new stadium next season.
It would have been nice to started in the new stadium with the European Cup but we have a lot to look forward too.

Maybe losing in the final could be a blessing in disguise. I think Henry might have left if they secured the Champions League as he has won every honour at club level, now he has unfinished business after losing in the final!!

I think you are spot on JT.

Rather than "blaming" the referee, perhaps you should be thanking him for not sending off Eboue in the 22nd minute as well. The team are a disciplinary disgrace led by Wenger. They did do well to get there but they finished the season with nothing which is no more than their brand of intimidation, cheating & conning deserves.

Kivver - 19 May 2006 10:12 - 21 of 51

Yes, i agree, thanking the ref for not sending off that brainless keeper AND allowing the goal, that is what he should of done. Wenger the winger is not moaning about the non-foul against eboue that gave the goal to Arsenal and not moaning about the 3 good chances so so-called one of the best players in the world had (henri). I really wanted the English leaque side to win, battled hard, but overall Barca deserved it.

Harry6 - 19 May 2006 17:14 - 24 of 51

JT - you may be a master investor, but you are blinkered and know fuck all about football.

Queen - marry me.

queen1 - 19 May 2006 19:32 - 25 of 51

Why Harry6, we hardly know each other :-) But at least you're not a Gooner so there's always a chance!

Harry6 - 19 May 2006 19:57 - 26 of 51

Queen, a mere bagatelle. OK, we hardly know each other, I agree, but can't you just feel the warmth flowing through that keyboard. The humour, the fun, the nights in sharing a copy of the Investor's Chronicle.

It'll be overnight stays at financial conferences soon, just so we can watch the football on the box, you just see if it isn't. Oh how we'll laugh.

barclay - 19 May 2006 22:52 - 27 of 51

Arsenal needed this experience to enable them to win it next year, and with henry staying and a squad reshuffle and buying spree, they will win next time.

C'mon yee Gunners!

queen1 - 20 May 2006 13:49 - 28 of 51

Harry6 - I'm laughing already :-)

barclay - You need to keep all 11 players on the pitch to win in Europe and that will never happen for the dirtiest team this side of Christendom.

Harry6 - 20 May 2006 14:58 - 29 of 51

Barclay - I'm prepared to bet that you never go to games. If you did, there is no way you could spout that rubbish about a bunch of cheats and divers. And then there is Lehman; the nicest thing to happen to him would be a frontal lobotomy, there I said it.

Queen - what is that funny :-) you do, is it a mating ritual or some ancient Nepalese tantric symbol guaranteeing that our children will recognise the signs of a bear market on the way.

Or is it just a sweet smile?

Harry6 - 20 May 2006 23:10 - 33 of 51

Treble - don't you dare lump Arsenal in with us English, nothing much English about them. But agree with you about them losing to a better team.

Queen - Goodnight X

AdieH - 22 May 2006 12:54 - 34 of 51

We have to accept defeat... the ref was right in my humble opinion to send off Jens, he had to make a split second decision... We were not good enough on the night... We need to move on (oh we are), Henry's staying, new stadium and some excellent young players (come on Theo), the future bright, the futures emirates red...

Pommy - 22 May 2006 19:41 - 35 of 51

we WERE good euf!!

We were unlucky.

In the first 17 mins we matched them and if not had the better of it!

For 55 mins we did what we needed to do, they didnt.
We got a bit lucky with the free kick for the goal.
With 10 men we still made chances.
they had most possession but you would expect that 11 vs 10.

They got back into the game with a goal that could have been dissallowed.
There second goal was a killer. We were tiring after playing with 10 men for an hour. The goal was technically an own goal as it was going wide until it hit Almunia.

they werent all over us and we had chances to score at 1-0.

If Barca are the best team in the world. a 10 man Arsenal arent far off them, which means and 11 man Arsenal team arent either.

I feel sorry for Jens, he had no choice, an extra yard on the ball and he saves it.
I feel sorry for Pires, I fee sorry for Dennis who would have come on if we had 11 men.
I feel sorry for Arsene who had set Arsenal up perfectly for the game. We looked more dangerous than them and started better. They even had to move the "best player in the world" to the centre because they knew he wouldnt get much of the ball on the left.

The clown referee ruined what was starting to become a facinating game so lets hope UEFA can use their power to get them together again in Athens next year.

Coz we know that the ruling bodies can always make things happen when they really want them too. Thats why they have refs like that clown.
A ref FIFA didnt think fit to go to the WCup, yet UEFA give the most important Euro game of the year!!!
