Golddog - 11 Mar 2003 10:16 - 170 of 591

Hilary, How to i go about deducting divi unless someone tells me?

Juzzle - 11 Mar 2003 10:50 - 171 of 591

Hilary/GD - if adjustments are to be made it should be an adjustment to shorts on xd day but longs shouldn't get adjusted till divi payment day.

And how many of us evil shorters can be trusted to volunteer info that will reduce our gains?

I don't think it'll work. Recipe for chaos and dispute imo. If GD has no automatic programme for resetting the start price whenever an xd kicks in, and is relying on all of us requesting adjustments each week, which then require manual amendment.. GD will have no hair left to pull out by about week 3, and nobody will know when/how to compare relative performances, as valuations will be taking backward and forward steps which only the individual player will be expecting.

I think the comp should stick to relying entirely on the current market price of the share, and it should be up to each player to anticipate how this might be affected by the xd date. If they know there is an xd date coming up, and the price will likely dip, don't go long that week! Go short.

I think messing about with dividends will kill the competition off by making it too complicated to bother playing.

Slacker - 11 Mar 2003 11:01 - 172 of 591

seeing that stocks have to be held for minimum 5 days, then shorting prior to XD can tip balance in your favour but it is not a sure winner, i would also be happy to see the game left as it is in order to save GD all the hassle, we could let jeero have his divi this time round to keep him sweet :-)

hilary - 11 Mar 2003 11:10 - 173 of 591

Hello GD, Juzzle & slacker,

I agree with Juzzle that if a system is to be applied, it needs to be applied uniformly. You can't rely upon the goodwill of bears to freely disclose ex dates.

:-))

All stocks go xd on Wednesdays. On Wednesday mornings they are expected to open lower by the amount of the dividend, give or take a bit for external forces. It strikes me that the easy solution is to adjust the opening price lower by the amount of the dividend. If this alteration is applied when you update the prices on a Wednesday, then the leader board will remain unaffected. What you need is a list of stocks which are going ex on a Wednesday so that you can apply the adjustments. I'm not sure what Juzzle means by adjusting long positions on the payment date ......... it's the xd date that the price will be lowered.

I note that GD was short BARC last week and they went xd by 12p.

:-)

Golddog - 11 Mar 2003 11:14 - 174 of 591

The fact that i might end up pulling all my dog hair out swings the balance around to just leaving the Game as it is, and in anycase if a Player shorts a stock for ex-div then that's well played in my opinion! I think leave the game as it is.

vasey - 11 Mar 2003 11:24 - 175 of 591

Quite right, pooch! (Nice snuggling up to you on the leaderboard......!!!)

jeffmack - 11 Mar 2003 11:31 - 176 of 591

Keep it simple. Anyone who challenges the rules should be deducted 10,000

Golddog - 11 Mar 2003 11:43 - 177 of 591

Vasey, snuggle snuggle! :-)

In all fairness a divi payment should be made to those that are long on that stock, this balances those making profits from shorting xd. As i said a player needs to request this payout. It can be paid out on that day.

Jeroo - 11 Mar 2003 11:46 - 178 of 591

Golddog - Why not take Hilary's easy solution this week and then if it proves to be to much of a pain in the backside then revert to the first weeks rules again next week where the dividend is not paid. How about that? It would be a fair compromise.

HBOS goes ex div. on Wednesday 19.6p

Golddog - 11 Mar 2003 12:11 - 179 of 591

Jeroo, That would give you a payout of 627 on Wed!. Yes?

Jeroo - 11 Mar 2003 12:38 - 180 of 591

Golddog - Yes indeedy it would :)

Golddog - 11 Mar 2003 12:46 - 181 of 591

Well it's good to have you on my team then. :-)

The Poochies will Win! The Poochies will Win! :-)

jeffmack - 11 Mar 2003 12:57 - 182 of 591

627 less tax

vasey - 11 Mar 2003 13:01 - 183 of 591

...and the juicy bone for Pooch as he now has considerably more work to do. You're a good-natured hound, GD - even if he is one of your team-mates.

Juzzle - 11 Mar 2003 13:31 - 184 of 591

Hilary - the thing i meant about those who were long not getting their divi till later was a reference to the actual payout of a divi, which I gather is what some are looking for, and which in real life doesn't come on the xd date but several weeks later. But I guess it may as well be paid early.

Other comps elsewhere - T2W site for example - ignore divis altogether and leave players to exploit the xd date by shorting if they wish to. An altogether simpler approach. - and simple is always favourite with me :-)

If shorting wasn't permitted there might be some point in rewarding holders with the actual divi once they've suffered the penalty of an xd-day dip. But shorting is allowed, so no need imo.

Mr Ashley James - 11 Mar 2003 13:31 - 185 of 591

GD,

You will be glad to see Elan Corp ELA has just started and intraday reversal so I am back square already(;-)

Golddog - 11 Mar 2003 13:34 - 186 of 591

jeffmack, Now that's funny! :-) But let's all pretend that taxes dont exist just for this game.....pretty please!

Vasey, If i roll over will you tickle my tummy?

Please note that im only incorporating Divi paypouts for long trades by request! If shorting on xd there will be no penalty!

Golddog - 11 Mar 2003 13:36 - 187 of 591

Mr Ash, I will update the game again in a mo and see where you are then! hee he.

hilary - 11 Mar 2003 13:42 - 188 of 591

I see what you mean now, Juzzle. I hadn't realised that you were proposing to make a one-off payment of the divi to the competitors account.

I think that whatever GD decides to do about the divis, it needs to be uniform so that all competitors know where they stand and are treated equally.

edit: By my calculations, GD's fund should be debited by 1,639.32 in respect of BARC going ex last week. I've a feeling that might influence his decision.

:-))
