Dont/wont these bags cause problems for the retailer? Imagine an ASDA store over orders and the bags are left lying around in the storerooms past the time they begin to break down. You go to the store, fill you back with groceries and the bag disintegrates in the car park spilling your shopping.
What I mean is, do they deteriorate past a certain time or do they only start to bio-degrade when introduced to the right conditions, i.e. a land-fill site or compost bin?

Oblomov,
When these first came out, I think it was Asda that tried them, I used one by mistake to cover a box in my garage. About 5 to 6 months later, it had fallen to bits as if it had been attacked by moths. It wasn't till that happened I found out that it was biodegradable.

Tesco today announced it will become the first UK retailer to move significant volumes of product from road to rail when it introduces purpose-built green trains.
( I know they can mold Greanseal into any shape, but!!!! ).
Seriously though it does show how they are heading for as being as green as possible.

Earlier this month Fidelity announced a holding in SEO of just over 3%. Today there is an article on a rare speech by Anthony Bolton, described as Britain's most successful fund manager over the last 25 years. There is a graph showing how pe's on growth and value shares have merged to a ratio of 1.5 compared to a long term average of 2.3 and a peak of 4. Bolton's view is that this ratio will grow. Where he has scored over the years is essentially in stock-picking. I note that his holdings in AZM and ASC, two favourites of mine, are over 10%. So it is positive to see Fidelity taking a stake in SEO; on past record they will grow this to 10%+.
Solid end to the week although volumes not large; selling almost completely absent as oblo points out. This suggess that the steam of selling has dampened down and we should get some steady buying next week ahead of the interims; not that the financials will be that significant but it is the end of a closed period and there could be a positive update.

Evening Eric, I am a great admirer of Bolton and also Richards of RAB Capital.I was interested to see in todays FT that Bolton said last Wednesday of the market in general"I think this could be the end of the bull market ,so corrections could take months rather than days".Maybe I'll get back in on St Leger day.Cold and overcast in Torquay.

mad pad. It is interesting that the investment by Fidelity in SEO (or increase over 3%) coincides with the negative comments about the market in general. The explanation is in the comments on growth v. value shares: he is going for the former, indeed special situations, rather than going by current earnings. Its almost the opposite of current emphasis by some on risk averse stocks whcih heavily discounts future projections. If he is right then there will be a movement of funds into growth shares based on projections of future earnings from the so-called value shares. So, particularly once SEO has passed the high risk stage, there could be movement into such shares whilst the FTSE itself becomes becalmed or falls back.

EWR, if you rate Fidelity as stock pickers they also hold just under 3% of Chaco Resources (CHP) although they may have bought more in the recent Placing but that has not been announced yet. If they have it will be good news for CHP too.

Does anyone on here know where the company, Belu, are getting their starch based biodegradeable bottles from? Apparently the Independent carries an article on it today stating that it is a first.

Interesting article here:-
http://www.foodproductiondaily.com/news/ng.asp?n=68021-natureworks-cargill-biodegradable
includes:-
Another company competiting in the biodegradable packaging market is UK-based Stanelco. The company markets a natural, biodegradable food packaging based on starch, called Starpol 2000.
Germany-based BASF has also announced it will launch a biodegradable plastic based on renewable raw materials in a bid to meet what it believes will be a growing demand for environmentally-friendly packaging. The company's Ecovio plastic is made up of 45 per cent PLA from NatureWorks. The other component is BASF's existing biodegradable plastic Ecoflex, which is derived from petrochemicals.
BASF forecasts that the world market for biodegradable plastics to grow by more than 20 per cent per year.
Food packagers last year faced price hikes of between 30 per cent to 80 per cent for conventional plastics due to the increased cost of petroleum. With the increases some bioplastics products reached full price competitiveness with the traditional oil-based packaging.
French retailer Auchan is testing the PLA in packaging for its fresh deli foods. The containers are part of the Mulit-Vit packaging line produced by Vitembal (France).

Oblo saw that as well ,looks like there is plenty of competition out there,SEO had better shape up fast.

It does appear that there is plenty of competition but SEO seem to have made the right connections (i.e ASDA, Walmart, Perseco etc). It's just a case of will these materialise into any huge orders/contracts.

Stanelco in US talks on biodegradeable polymers
By Greg Pitcher 10/05/2006
The UK company is hoping for big sales into the US retail market.
10 May 2006 UK company Stanelco is holding talks about its Starpol biodegradeable materials with six extrusion and thermoforming companies in the US, which supply packaging to a major supermarket and a top fast-food manufacturer.
Stanelco is hoping to license its Starpol technology to the suppliers in return for a share of the profit.
Chief executive Martin Wagner told PRW.com: This supermarket alone could order hundreds of thousands of tonnes of material, and we do not have the capacity, so we are talking to its suppliers about licensing them our technology.
There is slower progress in Stanelcos Greenseal technology. Deals were signed for the radio frequency sealing technology in July 2005, but Stanelco admits it has still not made its first delivery.
Wagner said: We were slightly nae thinking it would be easy to retrofit machines. We had to buy replacement machines in the end which took three months but now we are up and running. We will be placing the first contracted machine in the next eight weeks.

WRAP 100 receives US FDA approval
Stanelco is pleased to announce that FDA compliance for its new material, Wrap
100, has now been confirmed by Pira International (the UK approved testing house
for the FDA) for food contact approval.
This material's properties do not allow oil or moisture to pass through it,
whilst permitting moisture vapour to permeate out. It can be used for hot, fast
foods like burgers as it stops condensation occurring that can adversely affect
food quality. Unlike waxed paper, it is a fully biodegradable material with
obvious environmental benefits and can compete on a cost neutral basis with such
materials. Wrap 100 is significantly lighter than existing packing, which
presents potential cost savings and in addition will provide customers with
reduced transport costs and landfill taxes.
WRAP 100 is currently being trialled by a major quick service restaurant and has
passed preliminary testing. With this approval it can now undergo live trialling
in restaurants.
The material can be used in any application where waxed paper is used. In
addition due to its heat sealing qualities it is also possible to make bags out
of the material at a competitive cost relative to paper bags which have to be
glued. The approval allows the full range of applications to be live trialled in
the US by prospective customers, not just within the quick service restaurant
sector but across the retail sector in general.
Martin Wagner, CEO of Stanelco, commented:
"We are very excited about the opportunities for WRAP 100. It has properties
that will help significantly improve packaging quality in the fast food sector,
whilst at the same time providing benefits to the environment. FDA compliance
allows live trialling of the product and means that it can be sold for food
packaging applications within the USA.
"Stanelco continues to research and develop other new product ranges using our
IP to maintain our reputation as a market leader in new packaging materials and
systems across the globe.
"On another matter, I am pleased to update the position on Greenseal
communicated by our chairman at our recent AGM. We are continuing to make
significant strides with our Multivac conversions with trials into both a salad
and meat supplier to Asda going well. The Proseal AP60 currently being converted
for Hitchin Foods is consistently performing in our factory in Southampton
having run for 8 hours continuously for several days without any issues."
