Click Insert then Symbol to display availible symbols. You may have to play around with the font and Subset type.

If you email the document to anyone it might be best to embed the fonts to make sure they can read it.

Thanks Optimist, but I need more... am helping a friend write up some stuff
about physics (don't ask) and ideally would like to be able to put bars and
arrows (->) on top of any symbol.

So it's not going to be enough just to find a character set that happens to
have an A-bar or alpha-bar in it.
Maybe we should be using some specialist boffin package but you'd think Word
would be able to do it.
Any help appreciated,

Hmm thanks. But like I say, really we need to be able to have bars and arrows
over any symbol. Maybe Equation Editor is the answer (not especially happy
memories of using it in the past...)
Another friend suggested abandoning Mickeysoft and using TEX, which is
especially designed for boffiny documents. Does anybody have recommendations for
(preferably free and WYSIWYG) Windows tools that use it?

I don't think you will be able to do this unless you install a special font.

All the characters in a word document are represtnted by codes in a font set. If the font you are using does not have the characters you want then you can't display it.

If you know the code for a character you can quickly insert it by holding the Alt key while typing the 3 digit code on the numeric keypad.

Try a Google search for scientific fonts.

Iain, do you know the person sending the emails? if they are just spam or similar I would just ignore them, the person may well not have sent the emails at all, his address is just being used. It happens all the time.

One days something will be done to stop this spoofing but at the moment we just have to live with it.

I have just tahen delivery of 2 Western Digital Raptor hard drives and wish to configure a Raid 0 disk system on my computer. These are OEM fittings from EBuyer and come without cables or instructions

Do I need 2 power connectors per drive? I have the normal 4 pin power connector and the Sata cable for the motherboard, Gigabyte GA-7N400Pro, doesn't seem to recognise the drives.

I have configured in the bios as a boot from SCUSI, and a raid setup, entered the raid configuration, selected raid 0, asks if you are sure, enter Y, and enter, and then it takes you back to the original selection screen.

Tried to format the drives, selected the drive to format, low level format, and there doesn't seem to be any activity, no incrementation on the screen, ie 0% format etc.

It seems to me to be a power issue, any techies care to help?

2abbey, I dont know that mobo does it have on board raid? you should have a raid setup of some sort that needs to see the drives. Can the drives be seen from within the BIOS?

Drives should only need 1 power connection each.

2Abbey, are you following installation instructions that say to low-level format? With modern drives that is generally only done in the factory and I'm not sure it's safe. Generally one partitions the disk and formats each volume. Perhaps it's a RAID thing, I don't know much about it.

Have now found that either type of connectors are appropriate.

The mobo supports SATA, each drive connected via its own lead, sata 0 and sata 1.

I have left each drive on the default jumper setting and the mobo now recognises the drives on POST. F4 enters the raid setup, gives options to set up striped or mirrored array, but when attempt to enter striped it says there is insufficient drives in order to create the array.

I am sure this is a jumper issue or similar, but have been unable to find info on the Western Digital site or help elsewhere.

Might just admit defeat and take it to a shop!!

It may be a setting somewhere but it is also possible that it does not let you have a striped array on only two disks.

Why do you want a striped array? I would have thought that the only reason is if you really need a very fast disk but if that is the case then there are better solutions. If one disk fails in a two disk striped array yo will lose everything.

How can I ensure if poss., that a web site can`t access my personal details, as they have been doing e.g. they know whom my ISP is.I have put them on the non-trusted list in tools, which seems to work for my end, i.e.I can`t access them any more, anything else to block the sods.?

Oh and I have another PC which is playing up, it tries to load WINXP hangs on the logo, then goes into a long scandisc type process, for 15 mins. or so, then says its checking for disc space , goes to 6% of this op. and freezes

Make sure that you have at least the XP firewall enabled and prefferably something better. Run programs like Adaware and SpyHunter to make sure you don't have any trojans and set your internet security to max (if you can live with that). If you have a fixed IP address a web site will always be able to look up your IP address so make sure that your logon details are meaningless. If you want to access a particular suspicious site, log on to your computer as a guest. This will hide your normal details and cookies, and reduce access to sensitive parts of your system.

As regards your boot problem, you probrably have a corrupt system file. You can probrably fix it from the recovery console which you can start from the installation CD but this is not intuitive. If you have access to another XP machine then the best way is to mount your hard drive on that machine and run "CHKDSK /f" from the command prompt. Assuming you are running NTFS file system this will likely sort it.

Edit

Resist the temptation to reinstall or repair Windows except as a very last resort. It may not work and in any case you will have to reload all service packs and updates.

I keep getting E-mails with Blank "From" Fields.They appear to contain nothing except the time sent.Also they contain no attachments

Im using Norton Firewall 2003.Is it this removing parts of the E Mails or some new virus E-Mail

Iain, they are probably spammers trying to see if your email address exists, not much you can do.
