THE TALK TO YOURSELF THREAD. (NOWT)

goldfinger - 09 Jun 2005 12:25

Thought Id start this one going because its rather dead on this board at the moment and I suppose all my usual muckers are either at the Stella tennis event watching Dim Tim (lose again) or at Henly Regatta eating cucumber sandwiches (they wish,...NOT).

Anyway please feel free to just talk to yourself blast away and let it go on any company or subject you wish. Just wish Id thought of this one before.

cheers GF.

So what's new? Isle of Wight Festival: Flooding causes traffic problems

Flooding at the site of the Isle of Wight Festival has caused long traffic delays for people heading there.

About 65,000 festivalgoers are expected at Seaclose Park in Newport ahead of the start of the event on Friday.

I read that first time as Wine Festival.

I know what I was wishing for!

Finally! - Miliband: Labour 'got it wrong' on immigration

Labour badly mishandled the issue of immigration in government, Ed Miliband is expected to say.

In a speech later, Mr Miliband will say his party "got it wrong" when it allowed uncontrolled immigration from new EU states in 2004.

Mr Miliband will also say his party ignored those who didn't benefit from the big increases in immigration.

A future Labour government, he will claim, would limit labour market access to workers from new EU states.

So they did have a secret policy on allowing uncontrolled immigration , they lied to us. They should charge the f**king bastard's with treason. Did Blair tell the Queen at any of his meeting's with her ?

I've just been to the gym and in doing so, watched the bbc breakfast programme with subtitles - I know Ed is a 'trainee' Kenneth Williams, but its quite hilarious what the interpretor makes of some of his words.

Slowest Greenland sharks hunts sleeping prey

Researchers have measured the swimming speed of the ocean's slowest shark.

Data-logging tags revealed that Greenland sharks "cruise" at 0.34m per second - less than 1mph.

The study showed that, even when the languid fish embarks on a burst of speed in order to hunt, it is far too slow to catch a swimming seal.

Since the species is known to eat seals, the scientists think it probably "sneaks up on them" as they sleep under the water.

Sacré bleu UK in EU legal stink over garlic from China

Britain is being taken to court by the European Commission in a battle over a £15m unpaid tax bill on imports of Chinese garlic.

The UK mistakenly classified fresh garlic imported from China as frozen, which has a lower tax rate.

The European Commission is demanding compensation for the missing tax and taking legal action to recover it.

The action was branded "vindictive" by Conservative MEP group leader Richard Ashworth.

Agree with David Cameron saying Jimmy Carr's tax avoidance " morally wrong". We need that money to fire missiles into the homes of shepherds

No - I walk to the gym (about 10 minutes) and have, after a couple of months of walking etc, just started running again.

Its not keeping fit that's the hard bit - its getting fit in the 1st place! :-(

you need to do weight training as well otherwise you will lose your muscle mass , did you know that we start loosing it from about 30 years old but don't notice it until we are in our mid to late 40's

skinny - 22 Jun 2012 10:24 - 17258 of 81564

I am - and yes I did know. I was probably at my fittest (youth apart) in my early 40's, but haven't done anything of note - other than walking, for about 10 years.

Hence my comment in post 17258!

Skinny,

I hope you expect to live longer than that.

Longer than what Fred?

greekman - 22 Jun 2012 11:43 - 17261 of 81564

Anyone else think its very hypocritical any MP criticising Jimmy Carr and others for using 'morally wrong' tax avoidance schemes, when their favourite hobby was 'House Flipping' to avoid CGT.
Also their attitude, 'We have a better pension than you, so up yours', which once again knocks their message that pension reform and retirement ages are necessary, which of course they are.

Not forgetting that they are still not required to show receipts for all expenses.

Fiddling Barstewards the lot of them!

Haystack - 22 Jun 2012 12:02 - 17262 of 81564

I can't see the 'morally wrong' part at all. There are no 'morals' incolved with tax. Taxation rates are arbitary. If you can pay less then why not. If you can get everyone else to pay more and you less then so much better. I would prefer all taxation to be at a flat frate of say 20% and no increase as income rises. Income tax was only supposed to have been a temporary phase to pay for one particular war. I can see how there may be benefits to the majority to get people to pay more than 1% and it may be a useful tactic to make them feel bad about it. But taking the moral highground is a bit silly.

I wonder how much Jimmy Carr regrets his mistake in using the tax avidance scheme. Does he regret it it enough to pay back the tax he has saved? I notice that no one has mentioned the tax he was supposed to have paid.
