Hi Eric,

I think that Starpol is the key really as it works on existing machines and isn't mechanical. It has to be remembered though, that it's the "really big boys" who appear to have beaten a path to SEO's door. ASDA must still be pretty happy otherwise Wal-Mart wouldn't have become involved. I personally think that Perseco could be the first movers on a deal for Starpol.

Eric, you just reminded me of a chat I had with a supermarket chain buyer, on a flight from the USA once. Can't remember the supermarket concerned or the circumstance of the conversation, but he was telling me what happens when a new consumer product is offered to the supermarket.
If it is not a household name that people will demand to see there and have available to buy the buying team will want to know the power of the product launch advertising, to see if it will be an in demand item.
If this is a "no", then the supermarket buyers will only purchase on one of two conditions. Either the product manufacturer / supplier will have to rent shelf space to stock the product, or they will have to supply a certain quantity at a massive discount or zero cost, for the shop to assess viability.
I am wondering if trials mean "seeing if it works" to SEO, but in the lexicon of Asda/WM mean "getting it for nowt and seeing if we want it". In this instance commercialisation would probably mean "paying for it", rather than the definition we have placed on it of "actually working - real time".
Don't know if any of that makes sense or supplies another part of the jigsaw, but its funny how age old conversations are suddenly remembered by something unrelated.
Not ramping - just a thought.

Alan, How many Supermarket buyers do you run into on your travels?? Remember, Martin Wagner is from ASDA, so he'll know exactly how the game is to be played! I dare say he'll be careful on the contracts too so that SEO don't get caught out!

Your conversation has just caused me to remember something from when I worked at IBM. Used to do litigation for the accounts payable function and so dealt alot with buyers there...... Yes I know different market all together but I do remember them talking tactics or boasting you might call it.... Anyway the best price scenario was often used, where they tested hardware and then bought it very cheap and sold very dear creating increased revenue on new product lines etc.... The supplier gets market exposure in recognised testing and product sales proving it works for next to free and the seller gets to see if a hit with the punters. Very good for all round. Now Martin Wagner I'm sure recognises that Wallmart/Asda are far more repitable then the co-op so will be prepared to offer increased discounts for global exposure!! I suppose if the packaging saves enough money and the punters don't care how it comes we'll get roll-out anyway.... But if the punters like it and prefer the packing Martin Wagner has a larger say in how much the packaging costs. just a thougt or old memory should I say...

There is no doubt that WM will get a hefty discount due to their status, and also that they will be in control of events. SEO will have to be patient over this as well as investors. I am sure that wrap 100 will be the first product on board with perseco due to thier high level of interest of adoption. If Greenseal is not commercialsed now then seo management will be seriously weakened after stating that it would be witin 8 weeks. Hopefully things have been moving ahead behind the scenes and we will know this week...hopefully

Whilst agreeing that a trial may mean ' owt for now't ', I feel that the trials were so in depth and time consuming on both sides ( now over 12 months ) that Asda and Seo must have discussed very big figures.

I don't think the delay in fitting Greenseal is purely down to SEO, I think the main problem has been finding the capacity to fit and test properly, the equipment with a supplier. I would have thought 3 months over Christmas would have been more or less written off. Then, if SEO were waiting for delivery of spare lidding machines, that would have delayed things by a month or 2. If it was all down to problems with Greenseal equipment and Stanelco, I doubt wal-Mart would be talking to them, they would only have gone on feedback from ASDA surely. All just my opinion.

Yes, I fully agree. Not saying it was down to any particular problem with greenseal, ( as we were told it was mainly the down time re the machines ) , just that the trials were time consuming. I like you think that if there had been any significant problems we would have been informed by now. My point being that to spend over 12 months on trials, both companies would want significant rewards for the time spent.

Thanks, Alan: suspect we have hit the nail on the head re the commercialisation issue. This process has not been a problem to ASDA as they have had significant exposure with so-called trial packaging hitting their shops. Latterly, the problem has been round the clock working and taking machines out of service for retro-fitting. Nor have we heard much recently about licensing deals so how profitable will the deal negotiated be to SEO? OK, Tesco, Sainsbury et al will be in the wings but their approach doesn't differ one jot. I accept the argument that Martin Wagner is now on board; was the primary reason for his recruitment that it dawned that they had been taken for a ride in the negotiation last Spring. So commercialisation should mean some lolly but hardly on favourable terms. I hope I am not being unduly pessimistic. Even if the deal is not that profitable, we should still get some overhead coverage and a basis for decent profits from softer parts of the market (if they exist in packaging!).

Can anyone elaborate as to why non of the Directors, the CEO or the chairman has bought any shares in SEO recently. Only Ian Balchin And P Lovegrove have shares (not that many either) and they have had these for some time. Surely if they had confidence in the company and it's products they would buy in?

I am still here!

The Directors are not well paid and do not have disposable income after the penal tax we all live under to invest - also to do so could cause problems with potential customers!

This company is for the future and if their clients are anything like those that I have to deal with then patience is certainly a virtue!

Let's hope it comes good while we are all young enough to enjoy it!
