Sorry to hear of your problems.

Make sure that the Win XP firewall is turned on before you connect. It is turned off by deffault.

Just a bit of info, been using "Nortons Internet Security 2004" for a while, but found it slows down quite a lot even after the upgrade, decided to bin it, had enough and installed "ZoneAlarm Security Suite" in it's place, web pages load so much faster, even the PC is faster, should have done it long time ago, now a very happy bunny.

Sorry to come back with my Broadband problems but I am still not connected by Broadband :-(

I simply (at this stage) want to connect to the web using one PC - a new Medion machine. It has both wired network 10/100 socket and wireless. I am trying to connect it with a wireless adsl modem (3com Officeconnect 11g firewall router). I have tried disabling wireless, re-enabling it, at the moment the computer is showing Wireless network connection disabled, 1394 connection (whatever that is) disabled, and Local area connection enabled. The router is connected to the PC via the supplied cable, and the other end is connected to the microfilter.

When I try to type in the IP address for the router to set it up, it does not recognise it.

The router has the following lights:
DSL group of lights: Power - on, Sync - on, Online - off, WLAN - on.
LAN status group of lights: 1 - on. 2,3 & 4 - off.

I am at the end of my tether and am going balder by the minute. Any help / advice really would be appreciated.

I will not be able to retry again until tomorrow evening (unless someone is a night owl!) so I apologise if there seems to be no immediate response from me. I'm sure I'm missing something obvious.

SC: what version of Windows are you using. Also not sure why you're using a cable between the PC and the router, if it's a wireless router. What IP address are you typing in? Try opening a DOS box and typing IPCONFIG and post up what comes out (highlight text with mouse, press Return and then ctrl-V to paste here). IEEE 1394 is a connection similar to USB, not relevant here.

Kayak, it's XP home. Using a cable because they sent me one and I figured it was likely to be a more stable connection. Have also tried it with the cable connection disabled and wireless enabled.

Anyway, for IPconfig I get
Connection-specific DNS suffix.:
IP Address.............:192.168.1.2
Subnet Mask...........:255.255.255.0
Default Gateway..........:192.168.1.1

(i.e. nothing for connection specific DNS suffix). I tried this a while ago and didn't have a setting for Default gateway so I suppose i am making progress - but it doesn't mean a thing to me!

They ask me to type the IP address on the bottom (192.168.1.1) to setup the router modem but it says Web page unavailable while offline.

Erm...? Just a thought...

Have you actually registered properly with the ISP? Do you think they can technically accept you are a fully signed up punter? Is there anything you have missed doing in that respect?

this is a real stupid question, just noticed that having switched to streaming here from ` a competitor`, that my hard disc `ticks` like a clock on each change of price/news whatever, i`m sure it didn`t before, is it a different downloading system, or just me being paranoid about a fault?

SC, in network properties/TCPIP do you have Obtain an IP address dynamically ticked. Is the reply Web page unavailable from your computer (standard web error page) or from the router (will look different). Also check Tools/Internet Options/Connections, should have Never Dial a Connection ticked and proxy server unticked under LAN options. Also reset the router (unplug or there may be a reset button).

very true doc, and the reason i`m paranoid is that i have just had a new mother board fitted , then a new hard disc, the second one, and many other problems fixed under warranty,on this bloody m/c, not wanting to get into a libel scene, but this crowd i bgt, from live in Asparagus country, if you get my drift, utter crap,

Sequestor, that's a brilliant result since I didn't even know you had a problem :-) On the disk activity in monitor, I don't get it at all and would be surprised if you do. On the other hand there is a certain amount of residual disk activity in the background with Windows 2000 and XP even with nothing happening which you may be mistaking for it.

Kayak, that is very odd, I misread your post to SC as being to me, and ticked the " never dial a connection" as you suggested to him, it worked, the lord noves in a mysterious way, the residual noise from the hard disc i have got used to, however i have little hearing in my left ear,(tinnitus) my right ear has compensated and is very ` tuned in` ( the noise was quite a loud tick), the m/c is to my right,sorted.
trust me, I will say no more

DocProc, fully signed up with Pipex, line has been enabled. If I unplug the thingy (can't remember what it's called - my age I suppose) I can hear the extra hiss on the line.

Will check my answers to Kayak's suggestion when I get home. Thanks for the help thus far folks - will keep you posted :-)

Just a quick word to let you know that my computer is up and running with the RAID harddrives working.

A lot quicker than one single IDE disc running at 7200, the pair of SATA discs run at 10k and the seek time is 4.9ms compared to 8ms.

Just goes to show that the weak link in the performance of the system is the data transfer rate from the Mobo to the hard drive rather than simply just the processor etc.

Doesn't sart up any quicker as some people seem to believe on other sites, as it still has to go thru the POST routine, but with an extra screen

I hadn't got the "never dial a connection box checked". Can now access the router but still having difficulties. Will read the manual further and report back!

If I ask my husband to install an already registered copy of Windows XP Pro onto each of my children's PC's (they currently run NT 4.0), what will happen please?
