terod:
Not a naive question at all but a very valid one.
My positions were as follows:
I had along open on dow yesterday from 9560 and closed it today at 9739 thereby giving me a gain of 179 pts less the spread 18pts a nett point gain of
161 pts at 15/ot a tidy amount of 2415 tax free.

Then i went out and when i came back I took out a short opening at 9703 which i closed at 9668 giving me a gain of 95 pts at 15/pt a neat neat sum of 1425
Obvoiusly It was time to put the kettle on and calm my nerves with camomile tea and g&t on the side.

When i finished that the dow was at 9739 (opening at 9721)and stayed boobbing arounnd there signalling a resistance and so took another short to test the waters at 5/pt and as i write this the dow is at 9707 down 14pts making 70 and i am just watching the screen and have left it running.

Many times it is better to take a contrarian view and not to follow the herd mentality - need to step out of the "comfort zone".

Anyway no matter what happens I am quids in today at 2415 +1425 =3840 so can afford to take a bit of calculated risk as you quite rightly say "what goes up must come down.
Anyway better get off the screen before my mrs sees the figures and starts planning her shopping etc and shakes me upside down until i give in(just joking - she is not that bad.
By the way I have three daughters who i pamper to death and spoil them rotten ( am always getting told off for that but who cares we must spoil them as musch as we can because the world will soon intrude on them with responsibilities etc.)The youngest one will be 6 next week on the 20th ( the others are 12 and 9).
Sorry if i have got carried away with this post but sometimes it is better to be personal as we are all humans ( i hope) after all

rgds & keep posting -all input good / bad is appreciated

Harlosh - 09 Oct 2003 19:31 - 181 of 2279

Zarif, are you betting long or short on the quote provided by your SB company or are you placing limit orders to catch an up or downward movement?

zarif - 09 Oct 2003 19:46 - 182 of 2279

Last short of the day openes at 9721 closed it at 9627 that is 94 pts @5/pt giving 470. This gives me a grand total today of:
2415 +1425+470 =4310 tax free and who says there is no money in spreadbetting ( atleast today anyway) and Mr.Brown u can stick that in your pipe and smoke it!!!!!

Mega bucks: I think we should change names just for today only.(just jesting)There is a god and I think he must be smiling at me today.

Harlosh:
I am watching bthe screen and taking the bets in situ as i see them on the screen.
Remember the adage for us online traders:
"online traders do it in front of the PC !!!!!!!"

How are your trades for today????

Zarif - what a day! i trust you've closed up shop for the night.

just in case there is spare going, my three are all in need of new shoes.....well, not all three as youngest doesn't actually wear them yet (just a baby) but it won't be long.

oh, and by the way, don't think your mrs hasn't seen the screen, in fact, if she's almost certainly FULLY AWARE (we've got eyes everywhere)and has already spent it for you!!!!!

Why not put some US indices charts in the header like we have on the thread on the Traders Room. Always useful for quick reference

terod - 10 Oct 2003 15:48 - 191 of 2279

zarif.....you're quiet today.

you've usually posted a bit of inspiration by now - i look forward to it.

zarif - 10 Oct 2003 16:13 - 192 of 2279

Jeffmack - graet idea but to admit my ignorance I dont know how to do it? Can you give me and idiots guide as to how it is done and better still if you or anyone else (hint: Snoball or megabucks) can do it would be great and a must help for everyone else.As they say a picture is worth a thousnd words.

What are you dabbling in-please let me know and what trades.

I closed my long before as flws
Opened at 9648 closed at 9680 =32pts x 25 = 800 gain

Have opened a short at 9657 and closed at 9638 = 19pts @ 15 = 285.

Now am in a dilemma whether it is going to shoot up or down my gut feeling is that it will rocket down.

zarif,

as you know i'm only now becoming familiar with s/b and the DOW. according to my charts, which takes a short-term view, it's still treding up - but that doesn't help you as you're trading the volitility on a minute-by-minute basis.

personally, i think you've pretty much got the formula right. stick to it - move with it but keep lean, we mustn't get greedy.

btw, been reading the D4F thread (as i was in the throws of opening an account). you're with IG, right? are you happy to pay higher spread to the service? any major negatives with IG? I also opened an account with them recently.

I have no grumbles about Ig except the High Spread but the service and promptness that they give well compensates for it. Mind you since the thing is taxfree -better to give it to Ig rather than to Mr Gordon Brown!!

If you click on my name you can send me your E.Mail address. i can then give you some code to copy into your header, then the charts are always on top.

I trade Dow mostly but also S&P and FTSE. Used to use Spreadbet but now direct access to futures book with InteractiveBrokers (interactivebrokers.co.uk). Spreads are minimal (0.25%) but subject to CGT (If Gordon finds out :-))

Jeroo - 10 Oct 2003 16:44 - 198 of 2279

I you want charts for the header you may use this code if you wish. Just copy the contents into the header.
