KUALA LUMPUR (Reuters) - Malaysian billionaire Vincent Tan is exploring an IPO of U.K football team Cardiff City for as early as this year, people with knowledge of the matter told Reuters, in a deal that would follow the team's recent promotion to the Premier League.

A listing for the Welsh team would follow Manchester United's debut on the New York Stock Exchange last year, which raised $233.2 million (154.4 million pounds) in the largest sports team IPO ever.

The process is in its early stages, the people said, with details on the timing, size and listing venue subject to change.

Tan, who owns 36.1 percent of the club and is the former chairman of conglomerate Berjaya Group, has engaged at least one investment bank to lead the process, according to the people.

The initial plan is to list the club on the Kuala Lumpur Stock Exchange, one of the people said. The deal may be completed as early as this year, another person said.

Tan was unavailable for comment. He is Malaysia's tenth richest person with a net worth of $1.3 billion, according to Forbes.

Malaysia's IPO market, normally among Asia's quietest, sprung to life last year with several multi-billion dollar listings, lifting the Kuala Lumpur exchange to rank No. 4 globally for new listing proceeds.

Cardiff City on the Kuala Lumpur Stock Exchange? Sounds a bit Irish to me.. but there again -):

UEFA Champions League Final: Borussia Dortmund v Bayern Munich
Today on ITV from 7:00pm to 10:15pm.

After watching these two impress in their Semi-Final matches I'm really looking forward to watching these two tonight.

What a game two wingers playing down the middle.

Stan - 27 May 2013 08:03 - 1798 of 6918

Good game wasn't it as expected, Germany and many other European Countries light years ahead of us in terms of the way they do things.

hilary - 27 May 2013 08:32 - 1799 of 6918

Well England have produced 8 of the ECL finalists (including 3 of the winners) over the last 10 years. Spain have produced 3 finalists and 3 winners, Germany have produced 4 finalists and 1 winner, and Italy 3 finalists with 2 winners.

I would argue that it's us who are light years ahead of them.

CLF good game to watch, agree Stan. Looking forward to today's game, I'd like to see Palace take it. Prediction 3-2

No particular liking for either club George, but purely on a personal travel convenience basis I would rather go to Watford then have to go onto and across London if I go and watch Burnley play away. So glad that Palace won, hope you didn't have a bet on -):

Dil - 28 May 2013 02:56 - 1802 of 6918

Hils , difference is the Spanish teams were full of Spaniards , the German teams were full of Germans and the English teams were full of foreigners.

Both light years ahead of England.

hilary - 28 May 2013 09:20 - 1803 of 6918

I'm not saying that your statement is incorrect, Dilbert, but the main reason that the English Premier League is full of overseas players is that it's the best football league in the world and all the top players want to be a part of it. Their involvement only serves to make that league better still which is evidenced by the success of English teams in the ECL.

It's winning that counts and, personally, I'd rather see my side win with foreign players than lose with English players. People who say otherwise are normally just jealous.

Sure, I accept that it doesn't help the national team, as our own young players aren't getting the opportunities they might otherwise get. Unfortunately, international football can be tedious at the best of times, and I certainly wouldn't lose any sleep if I never saw another England match. Club football is much more important and interesting imo.

2517GEORGE - 28 May 2013 09:59 - 1804 of 6918

Stan, only a small bet which went down the pan (nothing new there). Wasn't a classic, and not the goals of previous encounters between them, but watchable all the same. I have no affiliation with either club but like 'ollie, also Watford have so many 'on loan' players from the club owner's other foreign footballing interests, that to me does not feel right, is it Watford or Udinese playing for the premiership.

Dil - 28 May 2013 13:46 - 1805 of 6918

Hils , in Spain 80% of players have to be Spanish and it's something similar in Germany I think.

Here you would be lucky to find 11 English players in the starting line-up of the top 4 teams in the Premier League combined.

There are way too many average foreign players in the Premiership and this is the reason England have and will continue to struggle at international level , we got a few at Cardiff.

The stupid money Sky pay is ruining the game imo.

Chris Carson - 28 May 2013 17:06 - 1806 of 6918

Spot on Dil :O) But as long as the rubbish English players continue to go further in the World Cup matches than the Welsh, Irish and the Scots, that will do for me.

goldfinger - 28 May 2013 17:17 - 1807 of 6918

Short term view, silly lad chris.

The English play with fear, the Germans play with power and belief, the Spanish play and send you to sleep, the Scottish play with an haggis.

We love it when you qualify Chris gives us 23 other teams to support :-)
