THE TALK TO YOURSELF THREAD. (NOWT)

goldfinger - 09 Jun 2005 12:25

Thought Id start this one going because its rather dead on this board at the moment and I suppose all my usual muckers are either at the Stella tennis event watching Dim Tim (lose again) or at Henly Regatta eating cucumber sandwiches (they wish,...NOT).

Anyway please feel free to just talk to yourself blast away and let it go on any company or subject you wish. Just wish Id thought of this one before.

cheers GF.

A Finnish teenager has smashed the world record -- and probably his phone -- in this year's annual mobile-phone throwing contest in Finland.

Eighteen-year-old Ere Karjalainen launched a phone the "amazing" distance of 101.46 metres (332 feet 10 inches), Finnish public television network YLE said after Saturday's event.

Second place went to South African Jeremy Gallop, who threw a phone 94.67 metres.

According to contest organisers, the competition offers mobile phone users a unique opportunity to "pay back all the frustrations and disappointments caused by these modern equipments."

Finland is the home of Nokia and is awash in obsolete phones, organisers said.

"There will be no doping tests," organisers said on their English website.

"However the jury can rule out the contestant if his/her mental or physical preparedness is not adequate for full a performance."

The event has been held in the southeastern town of Savonlinna since 2000.

Call to limit China’s UK nuclear stake

Chinese companies competing for one of the UK’s biggest nuclear projects are unlikely to end up with a majority stake in any winning consortium in an attempt to allay concerns about Beijing gaining control of the Horizon reactor programme.

Asil Nadir found guilty of Polly Peck theft

Former Polly Peck tycoon Asil Nadir has been found guilty of three counts of theft by a jury at the Old Bailey.

Nadir, 71, had been charged with 13 counts of theft of £34m from Polly Peck International between 1987 and 1990.

The jury is continuing to deliberate over nine further allegations of theft, having been directed by the judge that they can come to a majority decision.

He has also been cleared of one count. Mr Nadir was due to stand trial in 1993 but left for northern Cyprus.

He returned to the UK in 2010 to face the charges against him.

Stewart Francis's Posh and Becks joke Fringe 'funniest'

Comedian Stewart Francis has won an award for the funniest joke of the Edinburgh Fringe.

The deadpan Canadian funnyman was given the prize by digital TV channel Dave, whose panel put a selection of their favourites to a public vote.

He won for the joke: "You know who really gives kids a bad name? Posh and Becks."

The British King of the one-liner, Tim Vine, took the runner-up spot for the second year in a row.

Vine, who won the award two years ago, appears twice in the list of 10 jokes compiled by the TV channel, as does Francis.

The top jokes were:

1. Stewart Francis - "You know who really gives kids a bad name? Posh and Becks."

2. Tim Vine - "Last night me and my girlfriend watched three DVDs back to back. Luckily I was the one facing the telly. "

3. Will Marsh - "I was raised as an only child, which really annoyed my sister."

4. Rob Beckett - "You know you're working class when your TV is bigger than your book case."

5. Chris Turner - "I'm good friends with 25 letters of the alphabet… I don't know why."

6. Tim Vine - "I took part in the sun tanning Olympics - I just got Bronze."

7. George Ryegold - "Pornography is often frowned upon, but that's only because I'm concentrating."

8. Stewart Francis - "I saw a documentary on how ships are kept together. Riveting!"

9. Lou Sanders - "I waited an hour for my starter so I complained: 'It's not rocket salad."

10. Nish Kumar - "My mum's so pessimistic, that if there was an Olympics for pessimism… she wouldn't fancy her chances."
