Spaceman - do you know if there is a free registry checker available?
Thnx in advance

dotel - 07 Jun 2004 17:34 - 1810 of 11003

Cheers, space - it'll have to wait until tomorrow, cos I'm throwing myself out now :))

Spaceman - 07 Jun 2004 17:44 - 1811 of 11003

CS, there area few but I am not sue about them, I have used this one in the past and it seemed OK http://www.hoverdesk.net/freeware.htm

I worry about these products as the registry is so central and problomes in it can be very hard to sort out. Having said that it worked OK. I also used one in a product called system mechanic (I think) which I had a trial of a few weeks ago, again it seemed OK.

Have an update on my wireless router/modem farce. Have been talking to 3Com tech support and they think I've got a faulty one. Max 20 days to replace :-(

Will have to go and buy a basic adsl modem for now just to go on the web as I'm on dialup and have already got rid of my second line.

Interestingly none of the things that tech support talked me through were new to me. Everything I did with him was exactly what you guys told me to do. Thanks for trying. Unfortunately I had to wait until I had a day off so I could be sitting in front of the machine before I could talk to tech support. If the modem hadn't been faulty you foks would have got me there anyway so thanks again.

If you drag it down to the bottom, it should move and stay there.

Mega Bucks - 09 Jun 2004 10:06 - 1817 of 11003

ian, what do i drag ??? i have me start button etc at the top of the left hand side of the screen and the clock at the bottom of the left side if that makes sense :-(

Spaceman - 09 Jun 2004 10:08 - 1818 of 11003

MB, put the cursor next to the clock in the bar, press left mouse button hold it down and drag the bar to the bottom, it should snap into place.

IanT(MoneyAM) - 09 Jun 2004 10:13 - 1819 of 11003

mega,

All you need to do is put the cursor anywhere on the toolbar and then click and hold and you should be able to drag it back to the bottom.

Jules - 15 Jun 2004 15:25 - 1824 of 11003

wonder if anyone can tell me what it means when on one of my computers I get 'virtual memory minimum is too low' This computter us an HP with pentium 3 processor with 120mb ram 1.06 ghz. There are no programs on it besides windows.\I just run the mam terminal on it and it has just been returned with a supposedly new hard drive. Can just see the whole thing packing up again like last time:-(

Kayak - 15 Jun 2004 16:33 - 1825 of 11003

Jules, it means the swap file on disk is too small. The swap file is used when you run out of main memory. What version of windows are you using? The options are under Control Panel/System, then it depends on your version of windows but look for virtual memory or paging file. If there is an option "let windows manage..." then use that. BTW you should think about putting more memory in, 120Mb is very low these days.

Jules - 15 Jun 2004 17:10 - 1826 of 11003

kayak, thanks for responding. I have xp and the virtual mamory says that paging file size for all drives 295mb. As I have no programs except mam terminal running on this computer, I would have thought it was adequate. I am more suspicious of this computer as it has had the hard drive replaced twice in its 18 months and I am not sure that the repairs are... er..what the company who has the contract with comet...done. Just an instinct (but if it is like my trading probably wrong:-)

Kayak - 15 Jun 2004 17:19 - 1827 of 11003

Jules, click on Change just next to the bit you saw and set the initial size to 300Mb. I think it may be set very low and Windows is having to raise it to 295Mb, hence the message.

I suspect it's more a consequence of the disk drive having been changed but it really doesn't indicate anything wrong with the drive.

I would still add more memory, it's very cheap. A symptom of too little memory is a chattering noise from the disk drive when you do anything in internet explorer. That is because it is using the swap file to supplement the low memory.
