THE TALK TO YOURSELF THREAD. (NOWT)

goldfinger - 09 Jun 2005 12:25

Thought Id start this one going because its rather dead on this board at the moment and I suppose all my usual muckers are either at the Stella tennis event watching Dim Tim (lose again) or at Henly Regatta eating cucumber sandwiches (they wish,...NOT).

Anyway please feel free to just talk to yourself blast away and let it go on any company or subject you wish. Just wish Id thought of this one before.

cheers GF.

War artist observes Syrian life amid chaos

When British artist George Butler recently crossed the border from Turkey into Syria, he was greeted in the town of Azaz by abandoned tanks and piles of rubble from war-damaged buildings.

But normal life was continuing amid the chaos, and George - under the protection of the Free Syrian Army - started to sketch and paint watercolours of the scenes he observed.

To my mind, if your faith is strong, then you do not have a problem with it being questioned, in fact you should welcome it.
It shows that most Muslims follow their faith blindly, with many being brain washed from birth.
I feel that the same applies to many, if not most religious faiths.
For the record, I am atheist.

Years ago, I did try to join one of those religions where you all get naked and have lustful sex with each other, but was thrown out after only a couple of meetings after shouting my 'hail Marys at inappropriate times.

ExecLine - 04 Sep 2012 18:24 - 18121 of 81564

Apparently, these days you are either a 'Creationist' or an 'Evolutionist'.

Some Creationists believe the world is only 6,000 years old but they don't seem to want to explain how it just doesn't mention dinosaurs in the Bible.

Now, if the world was only 6,000 years old or so, I would have thought a mention of them would have definitely been in the Bible.

eg. "Adam was walking down the road and all of a sudden a Tyrannosaurus Rex stepped out and so Adam slayed it with a stone from his sling."

But it isn't and this is why I am an atheist and an 'Evolutionist' too.

greekman - 05 Sep 2012 07:38 - 18122 of 81564

Hi ExecLine,

I like the Adam an Tyrannosaurus Rex angle.
But you are correct as religions ignore what is 100% fact proven and yet fully without question accept what is not.
To me the story of Christ is just that, a story.
I believe that there probably was a person called Jesus who was a great orator and was put to deatth by crucifixion by the Romans.
I also believe that he was probably married and had children.
All this was the way of the world in those days (little changed in many countries), but what I find incredible is to believe that he was conceived by a virgin, (Mary and Joseph must have had a very strange marriage!) was killed, buried and came back from the dead.
Religions can do good for both the world and individuals, I suppose its all down to if you believe or not, but I think the harm religions do is far more than the good.
Religions must count as the cause of more deaths than any other single cause in the world, from wars to famines as famines are usually caused by fractions of religions, mainly tribal, obstructing the relief of such disasters.
Here endeth todays sermon.
