rather than pick out individual stocks to trade, it can often be worthwhile to trade the indices themselves, especially in times of high volatility.
for those so inclined, i attach below charts for FTSE and FTSE 250, though one might equally be tempted to trade Dow or S&P, which is significantly broader in its coverage, or even NASDAQ
for ease of reading, i have attached 1 year and 3 month charts in each instance

dz - i agree that the crash of the markets in china is indeed a worry ...... however, that country is so unbelievably corrupt and the accounting (non) standards so farcical, that fishing in that pond by a gweilo (round eye!) has always been foolish in the extreme
what implications this latest shambles might have on the rest of the world and its markets is hard to gauge, and impossible for me :-)

cynic 18116 - how can you possibly say china is 'unbelievably corrupt and the accounting (non) standards so farcical' just dont get it LOL :-D
the other problem with china is that a large proportion of investment is done by small investors who change with the wind and believe almost any rumour they hear - very unstable - then with global problems starting to bite although they / china soared in recent times may well in fact be hit hardest of all - what goes up must........................ ;
