THE TALK TO YOURSELF THREAD. (NOWT)

goldfinger - 09 Jun 2005 12:25

Thought Id start this one going because its rather dead on this board at the moment and I suppose all my usual muckers are either at the Stella tennis event watching Dim Tim (lose again) or at Henly Regatta eating cucumber sandwiches (they wish,...NOT).

Anyway please feel free to just talk to yourself blast away and let it go on any company or subject you wish. Just wish Id thought of this one before.

cheers GF.

Hillsborough report: Some key findings in the Hillsborough papers.

The Hillsborough disaster occurred when 96 Liverpool fans died after they were crushed within Sheffield Wednesday's stadium during the 1989 FA Cup semi-final with Nottingham Forest.

The fans who died had been in two pens of the Leppings Lane terrace. Each pen was separated by fences, including an overhanging barrier designed to prevent pitch invasions. Each pen had a small locked gate that opened onto the pitch.

The report, compiled by the Hillsborough Independent Panel, said that despite obvious signs of distress, it was a while before the police fully reacted and launched attempts to rescue those who were being crushed.

I went to a Jesuit run school and I won the theology prize. Previous winners had all become priests. It is a testament to the open mindedness of the Jesuits that they still gave me the prize as an athiest. The prize was a superb book of photos of art in the Vatican, which I still have.

The christian church was languishing prior to Paul. There were many sects with differing beliefs. Paul tried to claim that his Gospel was revealed to him in some divine way. Paul came along after Christ and reinvented Christianity in ways that suited him. There are large parts of the New Testament where he gets quite angry with the followers of the other sects such as Marcionism, Ebionitisms, Gnostics, Thomasines, Manicheism etc. Read the book of Galatians. There is all sorts of moans about other believers.

Paul got his way and his version flourished because he was more energetic than the others and presumably because he was literate. Without Paul Christianity would be very different.

Stan - I'm listening re - Hillsborough, shameful and disgusting. The Sun (to my knowledge) newspaper hasn't been sold in Liverpool since. Can't even begin to imagine the pain of any parent or relative who saw the front page of that rag. Then to accuse the Liverpool fans of robbing the dead that was unforgivable. At least the truth is now out in the open and justice hopefully will perhaps help them all to move on.

How often do plane stowaways fall from the sky?

Police are investigating whether a man found dead on a west London street was a stowaway who fell from a plane. Just how often does this happen?

aldwickk - 14 Sep 2012 08:49 - 18222 of 81564

And the Old Testament is non- fiction ? because its a testament. So if you call it a testament then its true ....... dream on

Even the Arch Bishop of Canterbury said Adam & Eve in the garden of Eden was a fairy tale

Met Office model 'better at predicting extreme winters'

UK weather forecasters can predict cold winter weather a season ahead with more confidence, according to analysis of a new computer model.

Writing in Environmental Research Letters, scientists say the model is better at simulating phenomena known as sudden stratospheric warmings (SSWs).

ahoj - 14 Sep 2012 13:56 - 18225 of 81564

DOn't worry about the weather. It cannot be worst than this summer!!

Fred1new - 14 Sep 2012 14:31 - 18226 of 81564

watching the news , these sub humans destroying everthing they see ,
about somes them up. egpty tunis should now be avoided by tourist let them starve .

This_is_me - 14 Sep 2012 17:10 - 18229 of 81564

aldwickk, you do not seem to understand the defination of 'non-fiction'

Just because someone is appointed to the position of Arch Bishop of Canterbury doesn't mean that he is correct.

Haystack, you have missed the point. In his day Jermiah was derided and hated, but his writings were preserved because he was proven to be correct in what he said. Similarly Paul was disliked and also seemed to have been a boring speaker but he was also correct in what he said.

What is the point of life for an athiest?

Haystack - 14 Sep 2012 17:20 - 18230 of 81564

Why do you need a point?

Fred1new - 14 Sep 2012 18:10 - 18231 of 81564

Hays,

It "oils" living.

aldwickk - 14 Sep 2012 22:08 - 18234 of 81564

T.I.M

Just because someone is appointed to the position of son of God doesn't mean that he is correct.

So everyone that as no religion leads a pointless life ?

Haystack - 14 Sep 2012 22:13 - 18235 of 81564

Clearly not. It just makes religious people happier to believe so. They have dream up some reason for believing such nonsense.

required field - 14 Sep 2012 23:05 - 18236 of 81564

Whilst the violence that has accompanied Muslim protests must be condemned : it is time that religions .....main religions should be protected from insults in this modern world......God in any form or his Disciples should not be insulted.......talked about yes...but not insulted......the West should lead by example on clamping down on dirty films taking the piss out of peoples religion and I don't mean films that are humorous, there is a difference.....this where we are letting ourselves down by allowing things to get out of hand.....freedom of speech is one thing but mocking religion beyond respectability is another....a fine balance is needed...Christians put up with a lot more than Muslims.....it is up to religious leaders and politicians to find a balance between what is tolerated and not...

Haystack - 14 Sep 2012 23:41 - 18237 of 81564

I think the exact opposite is true. Religions should accept that people find their beliefs absurd. Mocking religion is no different to mocking people who believe in fairies. Religion deserves NO special status. In fact they need to have much of their status removed such as charitable status. There should be no state fubded religious schokls. If you want a religious school then they should be independent and self fubpnded or orivate. A belief in some fantasy should not incur any privilages.. There is no balance. If yoy believe in things without evidence then expect to be treated as a joke.
