The finances of a senior Labour MP were subject to a secret police investigation which uncovered hundreds of thousands of pounds in mystery bank accounts, it was reported today.


Keith Vaz, a minister in the Labour government, had almost £500,000 deposited in accounts between 1997 and 2001.


A Scotland Yard probe found 'significant amounts of cash' which was said to have been of a ‘suspicious nature’, the Daily Telegraph reported.


Mr Vaz denies any wrongdoing. He chairs the powerful home affairs select committee which holds the police to account, and has seen him make headlines for inquiries in border controls, drug policy and G4S’s failings in the run-up to the Olympics.

he BBC was facing calls last night to open an investigation into Sir Jimmy Savile’s alleged child abuse.

The broadcaster insisted it had conducted extensive searches of its files and had found no record of any allegations of misconduct by the presenter.

But, amid repeated claims that it was an ‘open secret’ about Mr Savile’s interest in young girls at the BBC, critics say the corporation must make renewed efforts to find out the truth, even if it was many years ago.

Rubbish speech. A poll recently found just 3% thought milliband had charisma.

Dreadful speech, he tries hard but just doesn't have what it takes.

Even without "charisma" I have a feeling that he will replace the "Spiv" as PM at the next election.

Crisis, what crisis - Greece to spend almost €100m on building F1 track

Despite data showing Greece is heading for its sixth year of recession, the government is pushing ahead with constructing the track in Xalandritsa, near Patras.
The total cost of the project will be €94.6m (£75.6m) and it is hoped the circuit will be able to host a Formula One race in the future.

The news comes as a draft Budget for 2013 shows that the Greek finance ministry expects GDP to contract by 3.8pc next year after shrinking 6.5pc this year.

More bikes sold than cars in Italy for first time since WW2

As austerity cuts deepen and petrol prices hit a new high, the purchase of new cars has dropped to levels not seen since the 1970s.

Families are buying bikes, ditching their second cars and signing up to car pool schemes – a major shift for a nation which has one of the highest car ownership rates in the world, with around 60 cars for every 100 people.
