FTSE + FTSE 250 - consider trading (FTSE)

cynic - 20 Oct 2007 12:12

rather than pick out individual stocks to trade, it can often be worthwhile to trade the indices themselves, especially in times of high volatility.

for those so inclined, i attach below charts for FTSE and FTSE 250, though one might equally be tempted to trade Dow or S&P, which is significantly broader in its coverage, or even NASDAQ

for ease of reading, i have attached 1 year and 3 month charts in each instance

I thought you had squelched me.

I feel thinner!

As far as the indices are concerned, it is watch and wait.

Let the brave like Manuel plough the furrow!

That's great advice , watch and wait , that's how the world was built !

Fred1new - 28 Oct 2015 12:47 - 18756 of 21973

Doing so, may reduce the number of suicide bids.

cynic - 28 Oct 2015 15:03 - 18757 of 21973

indices currently in a very good place (6,440 and 17,693) having surged through potential hurdles (6,400 and 17,650)

FTSE now challenging next hurdle of 6,440

jimmy b - 28 Oct 2015 15:06 - 18758 of 21973

Oil rallying as well .

cynic - 28 Oct 2015 15:16 - 18759 of 21973

prob for oil is that it currently hops up for a day or two and then drifts back down
BP doesn't reckon sustained >$60 b4 2017, and even today we are only $46.05 for US Light

meanwhile, world trade stinks .... trust me from the sharp end :-(

HARRYCAT - 28 Oct 2015 19:42 - 18760 of 21973

.

cynic - 28 Oct 2015 21:46 - 18761 of 21973

thought i had cocked up on DOW by being too greedy and then getting distracted, but on returning from an excellent bourgeois dinner, i see all has turned out very rosy indeed

interestingly, cash FTSE is only a tad stronger but showing just above the important 6440 hurdle ...... i'ld be surprised if there isn't a quick surge at least first thing

Claret Dragon - 29 Oct 2015 08:12 - 18762 of 21973

What sectors have done the best since the China Wobble over past couple of months?

cynic - 29 Oct 2015 08:53 - 18763 of 21973

in uk, perhaps high street retail and entertainment, but that is almost guesswork
however, BOO, ASC and NXT have all done pretty well (i think) as have RTN, GRG, DOM and CINE

====================

meanwhile, i note i called FTSE wrong last night, and glad i actually banked DOW profit

Claret Dragon - 29 Oct 2015 09:25 - 18764 of 21973

Thanks cynic

I have not had much time lately to drill down too deeply on markets.

Dow has had a decent run during October thats for sure.

Stan - 29 Oct 2015 11:58 - 18765 of 21973

Any indication yet as to what the Dow is going to open at chaps?

Claret Dragon - 30 Oct 2015 13:27 - 18766 of 21973

Dow almost back to highs back in Spring.

FTSE 100 not playing the same game.

jimmy b - 30 Oct 2015 13:28 - 18767 of 21973

I was long FTSE twice this morning but stopped out of the last one , not sure about this afternoon .

jimmy b - 30 Oct 2015 13:35 - 18768 of 21973

Is it a sell off for the end of the month ??

Claret Dragon - 30 Oct 2015 13:39 - 18769 of 21973

Would not be surprised if we have a few big sell days in November. Just finding them is the bit i miss!!!!!!

cynic - 30 Oct 2015 14:28 - 18770 of 21973

i hope it's just month-end malaise, but that's almost rationalising

jimmy b - 30 Oct 2015 14:30 - 18771 of 21973

Not really sold off yet .Watching DOW .

cynic - 30 Oct 2015 14:38 - 18772 of 21973

strange one that today ......
earlier, cash dow was showing a decent 40 point rise, but that evaporated in "real time" and i think it was off about 25 points for a few minutes

meanwhile, ftse is just plain crappy

Stan - 30 Oct 2015 16:23 - 18773 of 21973

Dow turned positive, prepare for lift off.. or not.
