FTSE + FTSE 250 - consider trading (FTSE)

cynic - 20 Oct 2007 12:12

rather than pick out individual stocks to trade, it can often be worthwhile to trade the indices themselves, especially in times of high volatility.

for those so inclined, i attach below charts for FTSE and FTSE 250, though one might equally be tempted to trade Dow or S&P, which is significantly broader in its coverage, or even NASDAQ

for ease of reading, i have attached 1 year and 3 month charts in each instance

HARRYCAT - 13 Nov 2015 09:21 - 18882 of 21973

.

Claret Dragon - 13 Nov 2015 10:52 - 18883 of 21973

Moved down a tad more. Now looking at Dow.

jimmy b - 13 Nov 2015 14:02 - 18884 of 21973

Anyone thinking of going long on the FTSE ??????

If it tanks when the DOW opens i'm tempted .

cynic - 13 Nov 2015 15:20 - 18885 of 21973

17,230 and 6,090 (if you're lucky) are the next stops

did you see the news clip of the guy falling 1600' down a mountain?
he got out almost unscathed

jimmy b - 13 Nov 2015 15:24 - 18886 of 21973

No i didn't ....I'm tempted by the FTSE but don't want to hold over the weekend . Had a bad run this week ..

Claret Dragon - 13 Nov 2015 15:36 - 18887 of 21973

Out of FTSE 100 Short.

Got Dow short running.

Will cut if we get a bounce before close.

For a change I held onto a winning position.

No Caribbean though for Christmas

cynic - 13 Nov 2015 15:38 - 18888 of 21973

welcome to the clan!

FTSE
it has actually made a small bounce off ~7095, but it would take a brave chap to have started trading it

DOW
looking scary yet again, with the excuse of weaker than hoped retail sales .... yesterday it allegedly the oil price

cynic - 13 Nov 2015 15:39 - 18889 of 21973

claret - thanks for the spelling correction!

common sense says that dow ought to bounce and perhaps significantly before the close, but common sense and logic are currently in short supply

currently, 17,290/300 is proving a modest floor to dow ...... whether or not that proves to be the case is in the lap of the gods

cynic - 13 Nov 2015 17:23 - 18890 of 21973

well i'm good for predicting for everyone else, as i see DOW is currently down only 60 after 160
whether that holds, or even that strong bounce into blue is on the cards, i certainly have no idea

shame i don't take my own advice - eg i said here or on advfn a couple of weeks back that i could see nothing good on the world economic scene

Claret Dragon - 13 Nov 2015 17:55 - 18891 of 21973

Dow giving up lots of chances to win and lose very quickly.

jimmy b - 14 Nov 2015 10:21 - 18892 of 21973

Interesting FTSE / DOW Monday .

cynic - 14 Nov 2015 11:44 - 18893 of 21973

when dow closed, markets took up defensive positions so
cash DOW currently showing 17,195
cash FTSE currently showing 6,080

as far as i can tell,
cash DAX is currently 10,650

IG run a sunday book though not for DAX
it seems little used, but it'll be interesting to see if that indicates any further (significant) move in either direction

===============

as no money involved, other than through any position you may running, how would you call monday from the above levels?

gut instinct is that there'll be at least an initial crash, but that could be short lived as i don't think the paris outrage has any real significance to world trade and economics

patshere - 14 Nov 2015 13:08 - 18894 of 21973

ftse down 4.2% this week, and with no major financial affecting news!!

cynic - 14 Nov 2015 13:36 - 18895 of 21973

pat - the markets were happy to be unnerved by the continuing gloom from china and some pretty soggy figures re oil and retail from usa

jimmy b - 14 Nov 2015 14:50 - 18896 of 21973

cynic we surely will have a large bounce at some point ,i'm going to go long and hold my nerve . Got stopped out on Friday .

cynic - 15 Nov 2015 09:10 - 18897 of 21973

good job you were
Sunday IG showing FTSE down a further 70, DOW 85 and DAX 135

Monday may be double that

patshere - 15 Nov 2015 10:54 - 18898 of 21973

IG Sunday ftse down 50-60 pts @10.40

cynic - 15 Nov 2015 14:54 - 18899 of 21973

amended as of now, and seems to have stabilised at the following levels
Sunday IG showing FTSE down a further 60, DOW 115 and DAX 150

Claret Dragon - 15 Nov 2015 18:21 - 18900 of 21973

CAC40 probably get the worst fall

cynic - 15 Nov 2015 19:04 - 18901 of 21973

now 65,125,175 respectively

however, as jimmy said yesterday (i think), the fall will be overdone and a sizeable bounce - perhaps short-lived - will occur
timing will be everything, as always
