Fundamentalist, is it a standard XP sound?, I dont use XP so I dont know them. Have you worked out when you get the sound??

Fundamentalist - 29 Jun 2004 15:35 - 1890 of 11003

yes its standard. i always have the sound on and have had no probs in the past - the sound comes on a completely random basis

Spaceman - 29 Jun 2004 15:42 - 1891 of 11003

F, have you got adaware and/or (preferably both) installed? if so run them and see if its ad related, if not download them update the files and run them.

Fundamentalist - 29 Jun 2004 15:45 - 1892 of 11003

spaceman - thanks for that - can you now explain in english

daves dazzlers - 29 Jun 2004 15:53 - 1893 of 11003

fundy its not a humming is it , like the fan sound.have you played a pc game on it,and the noise stops.

Fundamentalist - 29 Jun 2004 15:55 - 1894 of 11003

No Dave its not - i know what the fan sounds like as I have had them replaced already!!! Turns out they had got blocked with cat hair and overheated

Spaceman - 29 Jun 2004 15:56 - 1895 of 11003

OK lots of sites install tracking stuff on your PC, these 2 products hunt it down and remove it, most of it isnt a problem but some could be. Its best to not have it.

I use both of them but one is probably OK most of the time, adaware is the easiest to use so lets start with that.

Download it from here :-http://www.lavasoft.de/support/download/#free

then install it by running the downloaded file. Then run it and Check for updates, when the update hgas completed do a scan, this will take a few minutes and will rpobably come up with several items. I always select all of them and delete them but if you are worried about that you can quareantine them.

BUT..... I am not sure the creaking is caused by this, scanning for adware is good practise and wont do any harm.

Does anyone else use your PC? could they install stuff on it?? kids for example?

Fundamentalist - 29 Jun 2004 16:00 - 1896 of 11003

Spaceman

many thanks.

no i dont have kids so they havent installed anything but it turns out the missus has put aol instant messenger on it. I am going to uninstall and see if its that.

I will download and run the adaware as well

Spaceman - 29 Jun 2004 16:10 - 1897 of 11003

F, I juste checked AIM (AOL messenger) and I am pretty sure that where its from, it has a creaking sound when a buddy logs on.

Fundamentalist - 29 Jun 2004 16:14 - 1898 of 11003

Spaceman

many thanks for that and all your help with this - a learning experience for me.

Spaceman - 29 Jun 2004 16:18 - 1899 of 11003

F, no problem.

Captain Scarlet - 29 Jun 2004 16:44 - 1900 of 11003

Spaceman - I've used adaware for ages and it's free but yesterday I was told about Spysweeper by my IT pal. He's gone over to it www.webroot.com - only free for 30 days but it found loads of cr*p that adaware missed.

Thought you might find it useful.

Regards

R

CS, webroot software is good but I dont think spysweeper is the best, Spybot S&D along with Adaware are better and free at the moment. I use Windows Washer from Webroot and its a fine program, spysweeper will probably end up being good.

Spaceman - 30 Jun 2004 08:42 - 1906 of 11003

dd, do you use dialup or broadband ?

Spaceman - 30 Jun 2004 08:59 - 1907 of 11003

dd, apparently moneytree can be manually removed :-

Open the 'Downloaded Program Files' folder (which can be found in the Windows folder), and delete the entry for 'NSUpdateLiteCtrl Class' (NSUpdate variant) or 'MoneyTree Dialer' (UniDist variant).

daves dazzlers - 30 Jun 2004 09:20 - 1908 of 11003
