OK lots of sites install tracking stuff on your PC, these 2 products hunt it down and remove it, most of it isnt a problem but some could be. Its best to not have it.

I use both of them but one is probably OK most of the time, adaware is the easiest to use so lets start with that.

Download it from here :-http://www.lavasoft.de/support/download/#free

then install it by running the downloaded file. Then run it and Check for updates, when the update hgas completed do a scan, this will take a few minutes and will rpobably come up with several items. I always select all of them and delete them but if you are worried about that you can quareantine them.

BUT..... I am not sure the creaking is caused by this, scanning for adware is good practise and wont do any harm.

Does anyone else use your PC? could they install stuff on it?? kids for example?

no i dont have kids so they havent installed anything but it turns out the missus has put aol instant messenger on it. I am going to uninstall and see if its that.

I will download and run the adaware as well

F, I juste checked AIM (AOL messenger) and I am pretty sure that where its from, it has a creaking sound when a buddy logs on.

Spaceman - I've used adaware for ages and it's free but yesterday I was told about Spysweeper by my IT pal. He's gone over to it www.webroot.com - only free for 30 days but it found loads of cr*p that adaware missed.

CS, webroot software is good but I dont think spysweeper is the best, Spybot S&D along with Adaware are better and free at the moment. I use Windows Washer from Webroot and its a fine program, spysweeper will probably end up being good.

hello is there any body there,i have got a problem. i have nortons a/v 2004,today a ran a check and have found that i have something called, dialer money tree,and i cant seem to delete it. i have never had any problems before,i tried to follow what they said,,but got lost,,,,,,,,,,any advice.it said there was a security alert.is there any way i can sort this out.

dd, apparently moneytree can be manually removed :-

Open the 'Downloaded Program Files' folder (which can be found in the Windows folder), and delete the entry for 'NSUpdateLiteCtrl Class' (NSUpdate variant) or 'MoneyTree Dialer' (UniDist variant).

dd, go into explorer, and you should see a list of folders (directories) double click on the Windows one and you should see the 'Downloaded Program Files' in there double click on it and you will get a list of files, look for and delete the ones listed but NOT any others.

This infection is potentially much more serious for you with dial up as it could cause your machine to dial a premium rate number, check you next phone bill.

I don't think you meant it but your post at 01:50 seems a bit off hand, I and the others that try and help here do what we can when we can, none of us can solve all problems but normally someone will try and help, I am constantly amazed at how many people on this site are able to help others. But expecting a reply from volunteers at 0100 in the morning may be a bit over the top ;-)

seems its ok, been to the windows folder checked,nsupdatelitectrl,unidist variant,alosmuldist.ocx,,sorry,no results were found in this category,,,came up on screen.is it worth me re-installing the nortons software.

dd, its sometimes worth running a different virus scan, the online ones such as trend posted by doc above are very good (click on the 'Scan Now' link on the top right portion of that page). I use the trend one when I am concerned about these things.

Its very difficult for me to be sure what the state of your machine is but if you dont have those files it may be clear. I would do a trend scan, clear anything it finds, then reinstall norton and rescan. If thats all clear I would be pretty confident that you are OK.
