Spaceman - I've used adaware for ages and it's free but yesterday I was told about Spysweeper by my IT pal. He's gone over to it www.webroot.com - only free for 30 days but it found loads of cr*p that adaware missed.

Thought you might find it useful.

Regards

R

CS, webroot software is good but I dont think spysweeper is the best, Spybot S&D along with Adaware are better and free at the moment. I use Windows Washer from Webroot and its a fine program, spysweeper will probably end up being good.

Spaceman - 29 Jun 2004 20:20 - 1903 of 11003

dd. norton should remove it, have a look at the following page, make sure your definitions are updated.http://securityresponse.symantec.com/avcenter/venc/data/dialer.moneytree.html

daves dazzlers - 30 Jun 2004 00:59 - 1904 of 11003

Spaceman - 30 Jun 2004 08:42 - 1906 of 11003

dd, do you use dialup or broadband ?

Spaceman - 30 Jun 2004 08:59 - 1907 of 11003

dd, apparently moneytree can be manually removed :-

Open the 'Downloaded Program Files' folder (which can be found in the Windows folder), and delete the entry for 'NSUpdateLiteCtrl Class' (NSUpdate variant) or 'MoneyTree Dialer' (UniDist variant).

daves dazzlers - 30 Jun 2004 09:20 - 1908 of 11003

spaceman, dial up, as i cant get broadband yet.i must of tried with nortons 6 times no joy.
they dont make it easy to find where your going,,,,,,,unless your a wizz kid,i`am not.
how do i get to the windows folder.

DocProc - 30 Jun 2004 09:22 - 1909 of 11003

Just a reminder on how an up to date 'one off' sweep and solution for virus detection and removal can be done with a "Housecall" from TrendMicro.

Spaceman - 30 Jun 2004 10:00 - 1910 of 11003

dd, go into explorer, and you should see a list of folders (directories) double click on the Windows one and you should see the 'Downloaded Program Files' in there double click on it and you will get a list of files, look for and delete the ones listed but NOT any others.

This infection is potentially much more serious for you with dial up as it could cause your machine to dial a premium rate number, check you next phone bill.

I don't think you meant it but your post at 01:50 seems a bit off hand, I and the others that try and help here do what we can when we can, none of us can solve all problems but normally someone will try and help, I am constantly amazed at how many people on this site are able to help others. But expecting a reply from volunteers at 0100 in the morning may be a bit over the top ;-)

daves dazzlers - 30 Jun 2004 10:05 - 1911 of 11003

seems its ok, been to the windows folder checked, nsupdatelitectrl, unidist variant, alosmuldist.ocx,,sorry,no results were found in this category,,,came up on screen.is it worth me re-installing the nortons software.

Spaceman - 30 Jun 2004 10:10 - 1912 of 11003

dd, its sometimes worth running a different virus scan, the online ones such as trend posted by doc above are very good (click on the 'Scan Now' link on the top right portion of that page). I use the trend one when I am concerned about these things.

Its very difficult for me to be sure what the state of your machine is but if you dont have those files it may be clear. I would do a trend scan, clear anything it finds, then reinstall norton and rescan. If thats all clear I would be pretty confident that you are OK.

good luck.

daves dazzlers - 30 Jun 2004 10:12 - 1913 of 11003

spaceman i forgot all about the time,,i did not post, expecting help at that time honest. i did phone bt yesterday evening and there is no premiun rate number charges on the bill.

daves dazzlers - 30 Jun 2004 10:52 - 1914 of 11003

it says/system ok.thanks to you all,,cheers.dd

daves dazzlers - 30 Jun 2004 11:52 - 1915 of 11003

i have phoned my isp,and now broadband is available so i have changed over{my be safer}?.

Spaceman - 30 Jun 2004 12:21 - 1916 of 11003

dd, safer as far as dialers are concerned (as lond as you disconnect your dial up modem when you go boradband) however the extra usability of BB tend to mean you will use the internet more and be exposed to more threats. This is not something to worry about but its worth being aware. Here are a few pointers that might help :-

Use a Router if possible, this allows you to share the connection with more than 1 PC at the same time but more importantly most of them have a simple but effective firewall built in. If you dont use a router use a software firewall like Zonealarm

Use a virus scanner, norton etc, I use a free one from grisoft called AVG. Untill recently I did not have an installed scanner I just used housecall every now and then.

Use spware scanning software to find and remove spyware. I use both Adaware free version and Spybot Search and destroy.

Use something like Windows Washer to check and remove junk from your PC.

I also use some extensions to Spybor and Adaware plus some other resident programs to bloc spyware rom being installed and to do something with adverts!

and have fun......

I notice some are seeming to be having problems with Norton Virus blockers software.

When I used it some years ago it seemed to slow my computer down and have constant conflicts with software.

I changed to Antivir.guard which is free and I use Pop up stopper from Panicware
"Marvellous" They both are updated regularly by internet ann touch wood seem effective and my computers are old but appear faster than some of the later models running Norton.

I am content with Windows 2000 and seeing other using XP will stay with someting I know a "little" about.
