Alan, apart from the February RNS which stated:-
"Stanelco is proud to announce its involvement in Wal-Mart's Packaging Sustainable Value Network and the identification of specific areas for co-operation." I can't remember a specific Greenseal/Wal-Mart announcement although it must have always been in the background.

I think its the first time its been explicitly stated. Wal marts SVN is one thing, but that announcement says it is in talks with WM. I hope thats a portent of good things. Can't be anything concrete, cos it would have to be RNS'd, but still positive.
More so, because in the old days of RNS being written by Hans Christian Andersson, it would have been trumpeted by now as the deal of the century. Under the new regime it looks like they will be tight lipped until its signed, sealed, delivered.

Am I going mad or did I just read
"Stanelco has also extended its exclusivity deal with Asda until the end of this year"
and yet the recent RNS states-
"The original terms of the agreement between ASDA and Stanelco, as announced on 24 March 2005, for Stanelcos GREENSEAL technology have been extended for another 12 months, other than the exclusivity arrangement with ASDA which has been waived".

25 Aug 2006

UK retailer Asda will stock packages sealed with radio frequency (RF) on its shelves by 2007.

The retailer is undertaking trials on salad packaged with UK-based packaging company Stanelcos GreenSeal RF technology - a more efficient and economical method of sealing, which leads to fewer leaks and requires less packaging material.

The trials are going well, says Mike Feast, Stanelcos technical director. They are to determine the shelf-life of salads contained within the RF sealed packaging, and we have shown that the shelf-life is as good, if not better, than packages which are heat-sealed.

GreenSeal allows the sealing of materials without the use of laminated polyethylene (PE) layers, as is the usual practice. The removal of PE laminations can result in a cost saving of up to 20%.

RF technology does not compromise the performance of materials like polylactic acid (PLA). Asda recently finished testing some packaging made with PLA from NatureWorks if RF is used to seal these packages, rather than PE, they will still be able to break down.

Stanelco has just extended its agreement with Asda for another year. The technology is no longer exclusive to the retailer, but Stanelco says Asda will still be the first to take it to market on a large scale.

All the other UK retailers are interested, but we will not offer them the technology until we have finished the trials with Asda, says Feast. We are hoping the suppliers to the supermarkets will help us take the technology forward.

After trials have finished with salad packaging, Stanelco will expand the packaging to other food types.

In the second quarter of 2005 Stanelco entered into an agreement to give Asda full rights to the GreenSeal technology. Stanelco says the market roll-out of the technology has experienced delays due to difficulties in gaining access to machines to test the technology in a factory environment."

Thats 2 highly encouraging pieces of news tonight. Maybe it is them that is keeping me awake!

Butane's PackagingNews item adds about the Print Station - new to me.

PM1 and Kim's item is about Salads - not new to me.

Most sealed packaged salads are in printed bags - neatly bringing these two News items together.

Through research it seems the good weather earlier this summer considerably increased demand for salads which presumably prevented the immediate trialing of Greenseal. The producers, processors and packers of salad bags were having to work harder than expected to meet a higher demand.
Such would be ASDA's pressure on suppliers to supply to their sales led demands (to say nothing of tight margins) that this must have prevented sufficient downtime for machine convertion until a cooler spell.

Looks like the recent cooler showery weather has allowed this to commence now. Every cloud has a silver lining!

Further thought...

As the majority of prepared leaf salads are already sold in printed bags why the need to get a Print Station working alongside the GS sealing?

This suggests the material the print is going on is new. What new material? STARPOL?

Hmmmm....... Starpol and Greenseal together. Double whammy?

My Info is that Asda are more turned on by Starpol than Greenseal, though they love GS, so I think a double whammy is highly likely.

I am Oily, but I have been promoted to the 1st XI, and My Asda contact is crap and in the 2nd XI.
I know what you are thinking (I think), so let me tell you all what I have been told.
As I said a couple of weeks ago, GS will be available in Asda stores from September, for a 3 month customer feedback study. Based on the results of that more orders will follow. My contact thinks that the feedback is a foregone conclusion, for many reasons, including the one that when people are told something is new and improved they automatically tick the "It's better " box on the form!! The other reason being that Asda do not put anything in store unless they are absolutely certain of its success.
The 2007 thing ties up uncannily with the September + 3 months and my friends certtainty that the trial is a rubber stamp.
One thing I have been a bit quieter about is the local produce pilots in the south. Apparantly these have been tried out with WM for some time, with the idea that Asda will follow. This is now happening. My friend tells me the GS trials are very much the opposite way around. That is why (perhaps unwisely) I was so happy to see SEO as co-hosts to WM in September, in the sustainable packaging forum.
May well be co-incidence, but its a big co-incidence if SEO partner WM at this conference just as the product goes live here, and WM want to follow suit. There is just a chance that WM see the conference as a great time to say to the crowd, "This is what we have exhaustively trialled in the UK, and we are about to get it here, and here are the guys to tell you all about it".

Maybe I'm being a little pedantic, but it doesn't actually say they are in talks with WM over GS, although the article focuses on GM.

It says MW is in talks with WM, which we have known for some time, of course.

If MW was asked 'Are you in talks with WM', he would rightly say yes, but was he asked 'Are you in talks with WM over GS'?

We dont know.
