First of all I suggest that you immediatly enable the XP firewalls on both machines.

Open a command propmt window on each machine and type "ipconfig /all" followed by enter and paste the results here.

Check the following :-

That the Tools/Internet options/connections/ is set to 'Never Dial a connection'

That the PC has obtained an IP address, from the start/run box type ipconfig and note the ip address. Then go to the other pc and open a cmd prompt (start/run/cmd enter) and type ping followed by a space and the ip address of the other PC eg ping 123.233.444.25

Let us know if that works or not and we can add some more tests.

also running win 2000,not xp,and i have restored my nortons firewall and zone alarm,just closed it for a few mins,my pc running ok,
but my dads pc has xp,how do you get the firewall working on that,
iam going to reload ntl drivers,see if that works,i just thought i had that with my pc once,

I'm sure that this is easily sortable but I just want to be sure what your configuration is.

You have two computers, are they connected together via a network cable? Are they connected to a comman hub? Are you trying to access the internet through a common connection?

the above settings is from my pc,
i have an ethernet hub,one cable for my pc and one for the boys pc,
i have in the taskbar 2 icons that tells me iam connected,when the boys pc network cable is unpluged i can see it from my pc,
the common connection to the internet is from NTL,into my pc via usb NTL modem,the network cable from my PC to hub,then cable from hub to boys PC,

the boys pc settings (ipconfig)

just like to add the boys PC is a mess,iam thinking of a clean install of win XP
or i will have to buy a new win 2000 pro cd, as my copy has been damaged,

scussy, you can get copies of W2000 on eBay for only a few pounds, licensing not an issue in your case if you already have an original disk.

scussy, OK you are using INterenet connection sharing fo the connection from your machine. It would be better to buy a cheap router and connect your cable into that and then into the hub and share them like that, its also more sucure as most routers have a basic firewall built in. However ICS should work and I think you have had it working before.

Have a look at the properties of the conectoid for your USB modem (start/settings/Network and Dial up connections) and under the Sharing Tab make sure the 'Enable Internet COnnection Sharing' is ticked and you may also want to enable the enable on demand dialing tick box. In fact it could just be the on demand dialing box not being tocked that is the problem.

In Win XP open the properties box for your internet connection and select the advanced tab. Make sure that the firewall option is checked and then check the "Allow other users to connect through...." box. Select your LAN card as the Home networking connection and you will probrably want to check the other boxes.

This should set the IP address on your LAN card to 192.168.0.1 you can check this with ipconfig. It will also set your computer as a DHCP server which will give IP addresses to the other machines on your network.

On your WIN2K machine, open the network card properties and then open TCP/IP properties. Check "Obtain IP address automatically" and "Obtain DNS server address automatically". In Internet Explorer goto Tools/Internet options and select the Connections tab. Check "Never Dial a connection" then Click the LAN settings button and make sure that this is set to Auto.

just about to clean install windows 2000, see you in a couple of hours...

win 2000 pro installed,now the problem,cannot get on the internet,
my pc is ok,boys pc has the new install,i have gone through make connection etc,but still does not work,would it be a faulty card,
shall i go and buy a new router or hub,
if so can you please tell me the best one for sharing,
what about wire free,
looks like i need a new graphics card too,the voodoo 3 only supports win 95 and 98,

Have you gone set it up as described in my post 1969?

If you have then can you see one computer from the other? Also, do ipconfig /all on both machines and post the results.

I doubt that it is yet time to start buying new parts.

still cannot see one pc to the other,we must be setting it up wrong,
now cannot get the ipconfig to cut and paste,

Hi guys, just thought I'd bring you up to date on my broadband farce.

I now have broadband up and running. Got the router replaced, same problem occurred with the router as before on my wired medion PC, so tried setting up on my old Win 98 machine and straight in. The Medion one can now access broadband as well. Can't fathom why the new Medion using XP should have a problem, but wayhay, sitting here enjoying the speed.

scussy, on your sons pc go into windows explorer. Is there a folder called 'My network places'? Click to open it and carry on navigating down until to the 'microsoft windows network'. Can you see a workgroup name with the two pcs listed under it?

If not have you correctly configured them both with the same workgroup name?

Make a note of the settings so that you can change them back.

Just a quick update. Awaiting two copies of WIN XP PRO and a router compatible with NTL for my two PCs.I want to clean install my hard drive using WIN XP disc as boot-up. Could somebody please post a step-by-step guide on how to re-configure my hard drive for a clean install. Many thanks for your help.
