Thought Id start this one going because its rather dead on this board at the moment and I suppose all my usual muckers are either at the Stella tennis event watching Dim Tim (lose again) or at Henly Regatta eating cucumber sandwiches (they wish,...NOT).
Anyway please feel free to just talk to yourself blast away and let it go on any company or subject you wish. Just wish Id thought of this one before.
cheers GF.

Martin McGuinness the Sinn Fein politician has stepped down as Mid-Ulster MP to concentrate on his other jobs
does that include "acting as consultant" in training more teams to plant bombs (per today) to murder and maim those who have or had the gall to oppose the IRA?

Cynic,
I wouldn't think so.
He has accomplished the majority of what wanted for his concept of "Ireland" and probably believes he will now obtain more by "peaceful" means.
Go back to the 1950s and recall Bernadette Devlin and Ian Paisley period and recall what one wanted to protect and the other to obtain.
I would doubt, for the moment, that there is any "belly" for any more bloody conflict by the majority. If there is a real down turn in their economic situation and relighting of the old feelings of injustice occurs, that could be another matter.

i must confess that both Paisley and McGuinness made my skin crawl ..... i'm unsure which is/was the more detestable, though assuredly McGuinness was directly closer to real blood and guts and other obscenities than Paisley

i am much cheered by "the village idiot" .... it would have worried me greatly if he had anything sensible or even pleasant to say about me .....
confess that while he got ratted (seemingly one of his more frequent pastimes), beloved and i spent our customary quiet nye (have always hated enforced jollity), though this year in the company of number1 son, his wife and small offspring ..... a 70s menu (prawn cocktail followed by steak and chips!) with a bottle of respectable champagne and another of VERY good claret later, and we were all safely tucked up by about 10:30!
and may nearly all (less than a select handful are particularly and specifically excluded) on this generally fun, informative and good humoured board, have an exciting but ultimately successful 2013

Cynic and ...N,
You remind me of this:-
New Year’s Day Prayer for One and All
"Dear Lord
So far this year I’ve done well.
I haven’t gossiped, I haven’t lost my temper, I haven’t been greedy, grumpy, nasty, selfish, or overindulgent. I’m very thankful for that. But in a few minutes, Lord, I’m going to get out of bed, and from then on I’m probably going to need a lot more help.
Amen"

as i'm perfect, or so my wife always tells me (my mother would too, but she died about 15 months ago!), i think i would enjoy being some of those fun things to which you allude ..... it might be nice to set aside the halo for a while!
of course, st augustin had the right idea, but his request was just a tad on the dull side! ..... "give me chastity and self-control, but not just yet" .... perhaps i should dig him up and take him to some of the fun places, and then perhaps the sistertius will drop

Seven charity workers, six of them women, have been shot dead in north-west Pakistan, police say.
The women, some of them teachers, were attacked near a children's community centre. A male colleague died with them. All were Pakistani citizens.
Their vehicle came under gunfire near the centre run by Pakistani charity Ujala, or Light.
Militants targeting a vaccination programme are suspected. No group has said it carried out the attack.
The incident happened in the Swabi district close to a road connecting Peshawar to the eastern city of Lahore.
what kind of sub humans are these scum
it takes some believing but alas it is true
they do not want there children to live a good life

Could not begin to explain my one and only experience - sea sick was not in it, had to hold the cooker grill handle whilst trying to cook pork chops and then wow - I didn't know whether I was on dry land or which land. My other half which was then walked in and could not stop laughing, he was made up as I could not speak, that was a first!!! Never again, good on you Cynic for picking up on my innocent remark of "spliffing New Year" - may be I should have refrased it but at least you have admitted that you are not as perfect as you proclaim (laugh please - not meant as an insult). Been there done that and got the t-shirt. Mine was supposed to be to relieve pain -prefer the pain than that experience. Life is a learning curb and we are never too old to learn.
