You have the benefit of taxation every time you wake up.

Whether it is in the form of direct payment to you for direct disposal by you, or when you drive down the road, having a health service which treats others to protect you, a police service which patrols your area, etc.

But, I would have thought you would be more at home in the BNP or Golden Dawn parties.

Actually, I have four daughters.

One who, after obtaining numerous graduate and post graduate qualifications, is a senior researcher and statistical analyst, at the Home Office.

Conversations with her have helped me understand some of the difficulties with immigration policies.

Another daughter, who after Ph.D., MSc and Computer Science qualifications, is working on analysis of medical data at a university, having spent three years in America working in the field of genetics.

(However, I doubt that she would be of any help in your particular case.)

Another, who already has two degrees, MSc and various other qualifications, is again expanding her qualifications in order to do what she wishes to do. (She also, has a role in evaluating overseas students and recognises the problems in that area.)

None of the above is likely to be dependent on you or me for their future survival.

And last but not least the youngest who has her own quite large successful import-export business and I am certain she is more likely to support me, than have any need future support from me. She also has an Honour's degree and numerous other qualifications and is unlikely to be in need of any generosity from you as a tax payer.

under the new(?) rules, benefit applicants are obligated to attend interviews, which at least is a step in the right direction

in california, the rules used to be and perhaps still are, that at citrus harvest time, applicants were obligated to help with same ...... i don't know what happened at other times of the year

unfortunately, the bleeding heart brigade would claim "forced labour" with all its particularly nasty undertones .... however, i think the great majority of the tax-paying population would concur that applicants should be obligated to work at something useful to society at large - that is of course commensurate with their physical, mental and intellectual capabilities

Tanker, for once I agree with you. I don't know how we got into this scenario where people in this country are far better off living off the welfare/benefit system than working. What makes me particularly angry is all the unmarried mothers in this country who have unlimited numbers of children by different fathers and who claim thousands of pounds in tax credits/welfare benefits. Child care benefits should be limited to two children.

And another thing, while I'm on a roll, why does this country pay out money for people - like this girl who was shot in Afghanistan? Evidently, now she and her family are going to stay in this country because they can get all their medical help for free. Tax payers in this country, who have lived here since they were born, seem to be subsidising all the waifs and strays and terrorists from other countries. Pensioners, on the other hand, who have lived in this country, fought for this country and paid taxes all their lives are treated like second class citizens.
