EPIC-codes

hangon - 16 Jul 2007 14:25

I sometimes wonder if I'm standing alone, with the rest of humanity having left the planet.
Why would any financial site (or organisation) want to have their EPIC codes confused with some others?
Tody it's the turn of Cambridge Minerals being clogged up with some (presumably Euro-based) Cumerio being taken over by yet another company - each time one or other makes an ann. it get pushed onto CMR, presumably sharing the same 3-character code.

Can't we have 5 and 6-letter EPICS?
This confusion would be avoided if Cambridge was given the additional code of Aim London (=al)....followed by a hyphen to avoid any unforseen spellings where it might suggest something....
SO, Cambridge Minerals would be [al-CMR]
I'm sure other Posters can come up with suitable 2-character letter codes for other Exchanges....there is a need to signify a full London Listing:

So Cambridge might become: ll-CMR, provided no other London Lised company used that code. (But note that I hate the prevalence of sans typefaces much liked these days....since it makes 1's and L's look the same in lower case....something of a flaw in the font-maker's skills, since removal of ambiguity would seem to be a high priority feature, over something handwritten.

. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . Can we start a drive to adding these extra codes?

Only in the case of Ofex does there seem to be a problem....which I do not understand.....a company can be Plus-listed (like the old Ofex listing, for tiny companies)...yet Plus also wants to include AIM-listed companies and I'm sure I've seen them quoting Full-list also. This seems to be something that should be stopped before we are all confused - either Plus is undertaking regulatory functions OR it's a stock supermarket....I don't see how they can be both. ---

-Furthermore I'm concerned that AIM shares might be traded on Plus and only show at the close of business - thereby cloaking activity which would otherwise be open, Public and at arm's length...

Er, unless I'm completely wrong...folks...anyone still here?

- It's a bit like a Hairdresser servicing cars....well, not quite but plainly confusing.

Fun for all the family in the EPIC game.

There are exchange identifiers already defined. For example BA.L is BAe Systems, listed in London on LSE, while BA.N is the Boeing Company, listed in New York on NYSE. AIM is treated as LSE and EPIC codes are unique within that set.

What I suspect is causing you grief is the news services, which have a habit of cross-referring news items on matching EPICs without too much attention being paid to the exchange where they're listed. This causes news items to be flagged against an EPIC when the news item happens to refer to the same EPIC on a different exchange.

Plus is, of course, another kettle of fish.
