The Governor of the Bank of England was at the centre of an electoral storm last night after saying that the austerity measures needed to tackle Britains budget deficit would be so unpopular that whoever wins next week would not get back into government for a generation.

Its frustrating to see GBP not fully participating in EUR weakness. This is largely due to investors worrying that the UK could get into the same sticky mess as the Euro area periphery. This is the WRONG way to look at things.

The basic rate of income tax should be raised by 6p in the pound, VAT at the full rate should be charged on everything except for food and children's clothes, and another 15bn of spending cuts will be required to fix the public finances, according to one of the nation's most respected economic think tanks, the National Institute of Economic and Social Research (NIESR).
Huge tax hike and cuts needed, says NIESR

The crisis threatening to spread out from Greece to the other vulnerable members of the single currency has exposed a problem. Europe has copious and precise rules for countries wishing to join the monetary union. There are no contingencies for a country that wants to leave.
Greece wouldn't find it easy to leave the euro

Loan growth in China in 2009 far outpaced that in other EMs, and by year-end Chinese banking assets exceeded those of the other 23 systems covered in this report, combined.

Japan's dispiriting brawl with deflation raged into its 13th straight month in March as prices continued to decline and the unemployment rate rose sharply.

Japan is steeling itself for a revival of the ancient Samurai concept of kessen - an all-out battle for survival fought in this century with bullet trains, sewage plants and nuclear power stations.

         JOKE OF THE DAY

"Two women friends had been on a girls' night out.

Both were very faithful and loving wives, however they had gotten over-enthusiastic on the Bacardi Breezers.

Incredibly drunk and walking home they needed to pee, so they stopped in the cemetery...

One of them had nothing to wipe with so she thought she would take off her panties and use them.

Her friend however was wearing a rather expensive pair of panties and did not want to ruin them.

She was lucky enough to squat down next to a grave that had a wreath with a ribbon on it, so she proceeded to wipe with that.

After the girls did their business, they proceeded to go home.

The next day, the husband of one of the women was concerned that his normally sweet and innocent
wife was still in bed hung over, so he phoned the other husband and said:
"These girl nights
have got to stop! I'm starting to suspect the worst. My wife came home with no panties!!"

"That's nothing," said the other husband, "Mine came back with a card stuck to her ass that read.....

'From all of us at the Fire Station. We will never forget you.' "
