News Headlines:    US stocks close much higher as investors cheered a surprisingly positive report on manufacturing activity in New York State as a sign that the economic downturn has come to an end.

UK shares are expected to rise sharply at the opening following strong gains on Wall Street. Look out for U.S. data, including consumer price index, housing starts and industrial production information which could again influence world markets. House prices in England and Wales dropped for a fourth successive month in May but at a slower rate than before, a leading survey said on Tuesday.

Lloyds: confirmed talk it is to sell its National Bank of New Zealand unit by saying late on Monday it is reviewing options for the business, following approaches from interested parties. Reuters: may respond to a steep rise in shares in electronic share trading network, Instinet, late on Monday following its addition to the Nasdaq Financial-100 Index. Instinet is majority owned by Reuters. XSTRATA plans to cut coal production in half for two weeks in July at its Mt Owen mine in Australia to ensure exports, hurt by the rising dollar, stay competitive in an oversupplied market. MCCarthy & Stone: The chairman of the retirement homes builder, John McCarthy, is behind a potential 650 million pound bid for the retirement homes builder

House Of Fraser 'For the first 20 weeks of the current financial year, like for like sales were up 0.6% on the same period last year and, as a result of previously announced store closures, total sales were down 2.7%.
