ROMAG joins the AIM Market in the morning 6/11/2003. It produces toughned, bullet proof glass. But is also a niche player in developing a method of laminating solar panels. The panels can form part of the structure of buildings and houses and provide heating and can power a domestic home.
The Government is big on this type of thing at the moment and provide grants of up to 50% of installing.
The laminated glass is bullet proof , bomb proof and demand comes from Banks, Government Departments, Security companies and High Profile site/buildings. Its also used in cars and trains.
Financialy we are looking at first sight at a sound company.
Profits to the year end 30th of September were 950,000 a 44% hike and sales were up 11% to 16.5 milion.
Its a placing which has raised 8 million at 45p a share.
Conclusion
This one looks a good busines model with the core of the business being in the production of Laminated Glass, and then the premium comes with the solar panels business, an area they are increasingly focusing on. Competiton, well certainly Pilkington on the laminated glass side and there are a few small private companies that are delving into the solar panel arena.
I for one will be looking to picksome up tomorrow but at what price??. My bet is that they will open at a big premium and settle down later in the day. Be carefull if you are tempted to purchase.
Any one with any thoughts on this one or any other that is coming to market????.
cheers GF.
ps, Im now nipping out for my favourite epic - pint. sees you later.

Thanks GF that's interesting. I'm going to look into this some more. I think this is one of the breakthroughs in solar energy - I mean the fact that architects can now specify solar cells where they would previously have placed other building materials. A kind of 'off the shelf' solution. Solar cells have become more efficient and cheaper too and environmental concerns have now forced governments to think seriously about alternative energy. I've seen an image of a house entirely roofed in solar cells looks like a slate roof not sure if that was this co or a competitor???
I'm trying to decide whether the companies that supply the actual cell making technology might be worth a look too as they are likely to be fewer than the end users. Romag look interesting though as they have more than one string to their bow.. Ta.
Found this...
Merrimack, New Hampshire - October 24, 2003 [SolarAccess.com]
"The UK's stated goals for deriving 20 percent of the country's power from renewable energy sources, and the government's increasing funding of solar photovoltaic (PV) projects is creating a fertile business atmosphere for renewable energy companies -- especially those specializing in Building Integrated PV (BIPV) systems. This demand helped secure a recent contract between GT Solar Technologies, a new Hampshire-based manufacturer of PV solar wafer, cell and module manufacturing equipment, and Romag Limited, an architectural specialty glass company in Newcastle, England. I hold pentagon protection (ppr). Similar sounding company to romag. one of their products supaglass which is applied to the glass protects the driver from brocken shards in the event of an accident. Also protecting against bomb blasts, smash and grab etc. used currently by police and the fire services. not long won contract for VW as an extra for their fleet as well. If I remember correctly??. Only a small company with market cap of arond 5M.
will the floatation of romag have any knock on effect with say .....ppr share price in the short or long term? good luck to all those buyng in tommorrow.

Found this site full of interesting stuff about solar cells...
http://www.solarcentury.co.uk/
"We envisage PV on the roof of every building, supplying clean power and achieving the deep cuts in emissions that are urgently needed."
They design solar solutions for buildings projects. They don't compete with companies like Romag but Romag should probably be in touch as a potential supplier (if not already) Other solar/glass laminates are available (St Golbain and SunOvation. Prob. others too) but this is definitely a growth area.
More generally, what are your thoughts on a 'machines that make the machines' approach to investment? i.e looking for the dull companies that make the dull things that the exciting companies need to make the exciting things? I'm thinking there may be less competition in these areas (but maybe there's less cash too?)

Gf,
The new company supplying wave power technology is called Ocean Power Technology (OPT). I have their prospectus & the idea seems sound, but haven't had a chance to fully look through their accounts/financial statements. I think this will be a very long term hold, so I'm not rushed & haven't gone in yet!
Will post more info when I have done more research!
