Trading Thoughts For The Week Ahead - Sunday 21st March |
On a slow week for corporate news retailers dominate the corporate news next week, with media and entertainment groups also due to report. US Economic data will be led by February durable goods orders on Wednesday and the final fourth-quarter GDP figures on Thursday. The Michigan publishes its final consumer sentiment survey sentiment for March, expected to show a slight dip to 93.7 from the previous reading of 94.4
Monday Wolseley building materials specialist , despite its warning in January and the weak US dollar are expected to release profits of 255m, compared with 201m last time. Carnival the he world's biggest cruise operator profits for the first three months should beat market expectations. MyTravel AGM should be lively after the directors awarded themselves big bonuses Ebookers should report excellent final results and its first profit in five years of 2.4m with sales up by almost 90% to 510m. Tuesday House of Fraser results are not expected to be brilliant after the department store group experienced broadly flat sales over Christmas. However it continues to attract bid attention with Icelandic group Baugur and Scottish entrepreneur Tom Hunter among those linked to possible offers. Wednesday Woolworths is expected to show that its revival strategy is continuing to pay off when it unveils full-year results. However they did disappoint in January when they posted Christmas sales at the bottom end of market expectations Profits before goodwill and exceptionals are forecast to hit 67.4m, against 52.8m previously. Barratt Developments looks set to add to its 11-year unbroken record of growth when it unveils half-yearly figures next week. Analysts expect the group to post profits of 128m, up from 105m
Thursday
Next is expected to deliver profits of 342m, compared with 301m last year,
with overall sales up 15.8% driven by both new store openings and improvements
to its product range.
Thoughts Stocks are expected to remain volatile next week due to the uncertainty of global economic growth and ongoing terrorism
Over the last 2 weeks according to 2 brokers I know many day traders have been caught out with margin calls. This volatility can be very profitable if you call it correctly but can soon trigger stops before reversing back in the direction you expect. You certainly have to be very wary about leaving positions open and unwatched.
Due to the slow markets at the moment apart from doing some BOT spanking first thing in the morning on equities I am trading mostly futures. Depending on the news over the weekend I will be looking for a long on the DOW based on the 6 month support on the chart above. I will probably look for a 50 point stop in which case I will reverse but if the call is correct it has potential for a 700 point gain over 3 months. The FTSE 10 day Intraday has returned to form predicting a fall on the FTSE Thursday morning despite a big gains in the US the night before. At the moment it is also closer to the support so I am looking for a positive start to the week.
As always I look forward to your thoughts and comments on the week ahead! David (Crocodile) David@SnappyTrader.com www.SnappyTrader.comAll the above comments are purely a personal opinion and no investment advice is intended. Please do your own research. |

Financial results from retailers this week will show that the High Street spending spree is showing no sign of stopping. Baltimore Technologies, the entire board ofthe former FTSE 100 company that was once worth 5.2 billion, may be removed by its biggest investor. Premier Farnell electrical components distributor is currently a much more efficient company than in previous years, helped by its investment in customer relationship systems. Online sales are also growing rapidly with e-commerce sales in Europe rising 72% last year to contribute more than 10% of the total. The group is also working hard to build better relationships with its large corporate customers, which include Boeing, BAE Systems and General Electric. Royal Bank of Scotland concerns over rising interest rates have limited the progress of shares in and its rivals in the banking sector but they remain good value. Underlying economic conditions are benign in Britain and the US, which account for the bulk of RBS's profits. Interest rates are likely to remain low, so the risk of bad debts at RBS is probably not on the cards. Another major acquisition would bolster investor confidence and RBS chief executive Fred Goodwin is known to be on the lookout for a target in the US. Buy at 1675p. mm02 have fallen sharply since a takeover approach from Dutch rival KPN failed to develop into a bid. But mm02 remains a target for predators as it is too small to compete against the industry's giants. A possible suitor is Japanese operator NTT DoCoMo which wants to expand overseas. The belief that mm02 will eventually be taken over means investors should buy at 102.5p. Business Post Group is attracting investors following its landmark deal with Royal Mail which opened up the UK postal network to the private sector. Analysts believe the deal will contribute to profits by 2006, reaching 12.2m by 2010 on revenues of 200m. The group is also benefiting from booming consumer spending through its contract with Dell, the US computer giant. Buy at 488.5p. | |
