In the UK leading shares closed higher, at a session peak, boosted by strength in financials and drug issues after well received results from Prudential and GlaxoSmithKline, and with a strong Wall Street in early trading helping to boost confidence and at the close the FTSE 100 was up 37.9 points at 4,324.9 with a volume of 2.348 bln shares exchanging hands in 176,792 deals.
So would the US do its about face at UK close tonight?
No a series of positive earnings reports, including one from blue chip Verizon, as well as news that consumer confidence rose to a two-year high gave stocks a kick up the bottom and in the last 2 hours of trading the markets marched upwards to end the day with the Dow up 123 over the 10k mark at 10085 the S&P up 10.76 at 1094.83 - the NASDAQ up 30 at 1869
After-hours trading is set to be dominated by earnings once again Tuesday, with online employment company Monster and software maker PeopleSoft headlining a busy afternoon.
So are we on the way up again or just trading within the range?

Morning all.
Don't know if we've moved off from the bottom of the range,
or just had an oversold bounce.
I don't like buying after a gap open higher, usually like to
wait for a pullback and then go if the US follows through
higher without a gap open.
Having said that, I've picked up some MRW again when it dipped below
179p. It seems to like this 178/180p area, and there's still that
lovely big gap down open from 225/230p.
Macd is also showing a cross up over the signal line.
Maybe catch you when the US opens.
Back to the flooring, just call me 'Jigsaw Mel' for the forseeable
future. :-)

Hope the flooring is not causing you too many headaches Melnibone.
Just bought a few ULVR with the proceeds from the recent bargain-basement
purchase then sale of ANL - nice return in a short while
from my more med/long term perspective.
Markets looking quite good today, still a few bargains about if that's
your 'thing' but as the index rises of course they will become less easy
to find again. Interesting isn't it? Different conditions on the market
suits different people, bit like the weather!!
