In the UK shares had a good day and closed at session highs, boosted by a solid start in Wall Street, ahead of the US interest rate decision later in the day.

The FTSE 100 closed the day up 36.5 points at 4,350.9 - the day's high - with the broader indices all in positive territory.

Volumes however were low, ending at 1.91 bln, as the UK awaited the rate call in the US later in the day.

And in the US the FOMC duly raise rates by 0.25% as the Market expected and with the Fed saying that higher oil prices had hurt the economy but that the economy appears poised to resume a stronger pace of expansion going forward the markets liked what they heard and closed strongly at their days high.

The DOW closed up 130.01 at 9944.67
The S&P closed up 13.82 at 1079.04
The NASDAQ closed up 34.06 at 1808.7

So all looks set for another good day in the UK although I am not sure what has really changed.
O yes sentiment.
Better get back to the sweet and heady.

sw - no, but I'm short at the mo'!

hijeff - a lot of FTSE100 stocks going xd today will limit the initial rise if any. It's due to knock 16pts off the index at the open, which will likely make up for any US follow-through.

Well, that's a fair bet as there was a broker price last week of 110p.

Obviously if the Nexen thing firms up a bit, that may change.

I have a wee problem. Here I sit in downtown Bangkok, paying rent to the cockroaches, scraping enough together to get on the internet (do we start "internet" with a capital??....is it as big as God?), I go to good old ADVFN, (just a term you understand) and all I can get is US style ADVFN. I re-enter www.ADVFN.co.uk ermmm...up comes Clem grovelling to Americana. Am I stuck with this or is there a fix (sic)
