Morning.

You lot had some party. I wrote a big long reply and lost my connection last night, which was a bit annoying.

Coffee pots on for those up. Got mine to take away. ;-)

These boots were made for gawping and that's what M&S hopes you'll do

By Hilary Alexander, Fashion Editor
(Filed: 01/12/2004)

Marks & Spencer is intent on making a splash next summer. Instead of the usual array of shoes, its new Per Una range contains only three pairs of brightly-coloured, floral wellington boots.

The boots, which will go on sale for 15 a pair at the end of December, took pride of place at yesterday's launch of the spring/summer 2005 collection.

Per Una, it seems, is taking its style cue from celebrities such as Geri Halliwell, the pop singer, and the actresses Jennifer Ellison and Sienna Miller, who have all helped to turn "wicked wellies" into the next footwear fad.

Wellies aside - and there are doubtless thousands of urban women who will indeed want to put them aside - this is one of George Davies's best collections yet for beleaguered M & S.

When it goes on sale, with first deliveries at the end of next month and further items phased in throughout January and February, it should do much to improve the chain's reputation, which has been battered by the performances of rivals such as H & M and Asda. Taking inspiration from designer ranges for next season by top Italian names such as Prada, Marni and Alberta Ferretti, the collection makes extensive use of intricate embellishment such as floral appliques, ruffled trims, sequins, beading and embroidery. One of the key themes, which emerged at the international catwalk shows, is "folkloric", which Davies's Per Una design studio has cleverly interpreted in variations on the gipsy skirt - tiered, ruffled, patchworked, flounced and with petticoat-hems. It comes in tie-dyes, florals, rose-prints and multicoloured stripes and is competitively priced.

Other "must have" items include pretty "cashmillon" (cashmere mix) cardigans, a pale green cotton dress appliqued with delicate pink roses, customised "Wild West" denim skirts and pastel T-shirts embellished with sequinned flowers.

The collection also scores points with its value-for-money tailoring. A pastel speckled-tweed jacket, fully-lined and trimmed with chiffon, is 59.50, with a matching skirt (39.50) and knee-length coat (99). Presumably, these were not designed to be worn with wellies.

They're the kind of thing some people wear to go to Tescos.

chocolat - 01 Dec 2004 10:02 - 20033 of 23498

Can we see your big long thingie now please, BigA - you shouldn't have been so careless with your connection.

amberjane - 01 Dec 2004 10:07 - 20034 of 23498

Morning Chocs, shopping in 30 mins! yes i do it in that time justthat it takes 5 hours to do the 30 mins!!! Glad to see you're up and about, will you stop keeping me up till the early hours....ive got a lot of shopping to do :>)

Ummm the boots...so another year i wont be shopping at M&S!

stockbunny - 01 Dec 2004 10:36 - 20035 of 23498

Morning Amber - good luck on the shopping, and number 4 is not as
difficult as it looks believe me, but go with what you feel
most comfortable with - you want to enjoy the day not feel harrassed!

Morning everyone else - yuckie booties from M&S, not my cup of tea!
How's the day going - better then yesterday I hope
:>)

amberjane - 01 Dec 2004 10:41 - 20036 of 23498

Cheers Bun, yes i do want to enjoy as well but i think it was the short notice that took me, as everyone was away didnt think we would even put many decs up but suddenly to get ready in a week was a bit of a shock and im not supposed to give myself any stress, mind you i trade so i cant take any notice :>) thanks again

hilary - 01 Dec 2004 10:42 - 20037 of 23498

Agreed girls ..... those boots are a bit tacky and look poor quality. Not a patch on Emily & Hannah, imo.

Amber,

I'll mail you that recipe a bit later on.

amberjane - 01 Dec 2004 10:45 - 20038 of 23498

Thanks Hils, and ive thought of one big benefit...no last minute food shopping with the hords for me coz mine will be all over in 3 days time...just gotta squeeze in a lunch today and then i'll really get down to it Thurs and Fri. It wasnt just cooking i didnt do this year, it was housework as well! Everyone deserves the odd year or two off dont they?

stockbunny - 01 Dec 2004 10:47 - 20039 of 23498

They do Amber, so don't worry!! :>)
Besides you've been busy in other ways, can't get round to everything
and no point driving yourself up the wall trying either. It takes time
to learn that - has me anyway - but it does make sense. :>)

amberjane - 01 Dec 2004 10:47 - 20040 of 23498

Oh hils, pdx? had its run for now or little more to go?

hilary - 01 Dec 2004 10:59 - 20041 of 23498

Amber,

I'm going to dump mine on a close below 160.

Priscilla - 01 Dec 2004 11:04 - 20042 of 23498

I wonder how many days 'Poochy's Parlour' has had more posts than the Traders' Thread in the grown-ups Traders' Room?

jj50 - 01 Dec 2004 11:06 - 20043 of 23498
