May I ask a question please? My son wants an MP3 player for Crimbo and I know nothing about them. Do they take SD cards, or are the songs stored on the memory within the player?

Yes you can convert but you will need software to do this.

Jeffmack,
because even at the highest quality music stored on an ipod is far inferior to cd's, I do have an ipod but there is no way I would get rid of my CD's.
hilary,
most use either solid state memory but some like the ipod and iriver use hard disks, i think there is one that uses both. The ipod (apple) is still regarded by mosts as the best.
Yes you can and most of the MP3 (or ipod as it does not normally use MP3 format) players provide their own software for soing this.
You wont go far wrong with the apple ipod.

Thanks Space. I didn't want anything too expensive as he'll take it to school and you can imagine what school kids are like on the bus with their mobile phones and other gadgets! There was a girl the other day who asked if she could look at the mobile phone belonging to a friend of my son's. She then legged it off the bus with the phone, never to be seen again.
Why do you say that MP3's are old school, Dazzling D?

hils, MP3 is just a storage format, there are others that are better but mp3 is fine for portable devices for most people. Some of the newer formats allow better quality and more flexability in how music in encoded.
sorry just noticed that question was aimed at DD.

You can get CD players which play MP3 files burnt onto CDs. See Argos web site or catalogue.

Did you know that the cost of an ipod is less than the cost of buying the Hitachi hard disc that is inside it?!
