Spaceman - 12 Mar 2008 18:20 - 20329 of 24230

evening from a nice and calm Manchester, a bit different from this morning, came up on the 0645 from Gatwick and it was the worst flight I have ever been on! And I have been on some pretty bad flights (mostly when I used to have a PPL and I was flying myself) we landed very very hard and bounced back into the air which was then followed by a second very heavy landing...

The pilot apologized for both of the heavy landings, I had a chat with the pilot and he said they lost 40 knots of airspeed and just dropped onto the runway !

Evening Spacie..well everyone has to learn sometime!
Being an ex PPL you will no doubt have heard of wind sheer, wonder if the pilot had :-)

Spaceman - 12 Mar 2008 21:28 - 20331 of 24230

Opto, I had expected the flight to be cancelled and when I got to Manchester there were several flights arriving. I watched a few others land and they all had very bumpy approaches but I didnt see any other land hard.

I am not sure it was traditional wind shear, we were not in a thunderstorm and the loss of airspeed happened just as the pilot started to flare. I didnt get much time to talk to him but it sounded like something with no warning and which he couldnt avoid.

Also to put it in perspective although it was a very hard landing (2 actually) I am pretty sure it didnt do any damage at all to the aircraft, we certainly didnt burst a tyre and although we stopped on the taxi way for about 10 minutes I dont think that was for inspection. I have seen films of far harder landings where tyres burst and where wings are damaged. Although it was quiet alarming it was well within what the aircraft is designed to take.

Spacie it does sound like it was a sudden drop in wind speed right at the crucial time....at least the fight was OK just the landing that was the problem. :-))

Was it something like this Spaceman :-) On this occasion the pilot was less lucky and clipped a wing on the go-around.

Kayak, I saw that on TV the other day, very scary. My flight wasnt that bad although we hit the ground a lot harder ;-)
