Bulgarians and Romanians who come to Britain from January 1, 2014, will be eligible for most benefits if they have work, are self-employed or seeking a job, have an address and intend to stay.

They would be means tested, but could get: Jobseeker’s allowance, housing benefit, working tax credits, incapacity benefit, disability living allowance, income support and child benefit.

Germany: Immigrants can claim child benefit until the child is 18, or 25 if still in education.

It is £160 per month for each of the first two children, £165 for the third and £187 for each subsequent one.

A scheme barring EU citizens from jobless benefits until they have worked in Germany for a year is being legally challenged.

Romania and Bulgaria: The only government welfare payments are child benefit, which is £3.50 per youngster per week in Bulgaria and £3.69 in Romania.
.
Councillor Nickie Aitken said: ‘We need some firm answers from the Government both on numbers and whether we can expect any extra help for bulging school rolls and housing services already squeezed to the maximum.’

Romania and Bulgaria joined the EU in 2007 but under ‘transitional controls’, most low-skilled workers have continued to require permission to come to the UK.

From January 1, almost 30million Romanians and Bulgarians will be entitled to live and work freely in the UK. Ministers won’t put an estimate on how many will travel here but the campaign group Migrationwatch says it could be as many as 70,000 a year.

Officially, there are 42,000 Bulgarians in the UK, but unofficially it could be up to 80,000. There are also thought to be 93,000 Romanians already here.

In Germany there are more than 90,000 Bulgarians and 159,000 Romanians. They are not allowed to work legally until January 1, as in Britain. But they can stay under EU rules if they declare themselves to be ‘self-employed’.

However the report by the German cities says:

A report by the German Association of Cities recounts problems of illegal working, schoolchildren being unable to speak German and a rise in organised crime since the migrants arrived.

Berlin, Hamburg, Dortmund and Hanover have seen a six-fold increase in economic migration from the two countries since 2006, which they say has left them struggling to cope.

The report says cities are facing “significant costs as a result of this poverty migration”.

It calls on Chancellor Angela Merkel to provide financial assistance to help them deal with the strain under which the migration is putting them, the Daily Mail reported.

“The social balance and social peace is extremely endangered,” the report says.

Tanker,

As a believer in efficiency, why wait a few years?

---

The forecasted “unrest” in Germany is possibly due to “rising” unemployment, with stalling economic growth and investment.

“Fascist” elements in society always like “scapegoats” to “finger” and blame for their own “failings”.

To a certain degree, that is what is happening throughout much of Europe at the moment, rather than a concerted address of the failure of the economic and cultural systems being operated within those countries.

-----------------

Fauxpage and UKIP are “breeding” on those “ blame assumptions” and their inwardly looking followers are swallowing and broadcasting them.

I wonder what colour UKIP will pick for their shirts.

Black and brown shirts seem to be coming back into fashion.

-----------------------------

Cynic,

A short time ago, you suggested one of the powers you might like to see repatriated from EU was that relating to fishing.

The EU must have heard you.

Interesting article, but for me shows the necessity of EU in the “modern” day.

That for me is why the EU legislative system is necessary and why we need it, for without "negotiations" chaos will rule.

We could of course go back to the 30s and 40s.

Just a little C+P from above:

"Government 'to borrow £64 billion more' than planned
The Institute for Fiscal Studies said the Chancellor will borrow £64 billion more than intended during this parliament.

The increased figures is due to Osborne's original borrowing predictions being based on a more optimistic economic outlook. The IFS explain:

He will be borrowing £64 billion more in 2014-15 than he planned just two years ago. This is because he is choosing not to offset the forecast deterioration of £65 billion driven by a worse economic outlook. Announced policy measures will reduce borrowing by just £1 billion. As a result he is on course to miss his own target of debt falling in 2015.

Indeed he is now pursuing a looser policy than that permitted by the last government’s Fiscal Responsibility Act. Had he not repealed that legislation he would have been obliged to cut spending or increase taxes by around an additional £8 billion next year."

No wonder Cameron wants to go on trips abroad.

Party in disarray, country in disarray and Osborne in charge.

'something like that' Fred.
Whatever... between the two of them they are in the process of reducing the Conservatives chances of being re elected at the next GE to nill. They will have to be removed from their positions to give the cons the slightest hope.
