From todays Irish Independent.
Find should lead to more wells in the future
::: Analysis Oil and gas prospects
PROVIDENCE Resources owns the largest portfolio of oil and gas prospects in the Irish offshore and yesterday's discovery is likely to be followed by several more wells over coming years.
Apart from the Hook Head prospect, which is the subject of the current drilling, Providence Resources also hold the licenses for significant prospects off the west coast, including the Spanish Point gas condensate discovery and the Dunquinn oil/gas prospect.
Multi-national giant Exxon-Mobil has already farmed into the Dunquinn prospect, one which has caused considerable excitement in the industry and a decision on whether to drill or not is expected by the end of this year.
Providence also hopes to entice a partner to come in and part-fund drilling on the Spanish Point find.
The Hook Head structure is a large structure on which two previous wells have successfully encountered hydrocarbon bearing sands.
The original 50/11-1 discovery well was drilled by Marathon in 1971 but was not flow-tested due to severe operational issues at the time.
The subsequent 50/11-2 appraisal well was drilled in 1975.
Pre-drilling work conducted by Providence suggested that the Hook Head discovery could contain prospective resources of up to an estimated 70million barrels of oil or 250billion cubic feet of gas.
