How to profit from Betting Exchanges (BEX)

How would you like to trade a market where you get large regular price swings every 10 minutes in the afternoon, seven days a week. A
market where all prices are set purely by supply and demand, few transaction costs, no middle men and you only pay commission if you win? Where you can freely act as a market maker and where you have direct market access and where you can create a spread for others to take?

Betfair has revolutionised the betting market and created an open platform for exchanging risk on sports events. This market is now viewed much more like a traditional financial risk market than an old fashioned betting market. Smart users have realised that there are huge opportunities on Betfair because they can buy and sell risk in much the same way they would in a normal financial market but without the burden of cost or the restricted access that is usually associated with traditional financial markets.

I did OK on the horses but just happy to end the day up to be honest. Bit late to comment on the footy now but Chelsea are priced to win.

Had a physio session which ran over till nearly half time - was planning on backing the two home teams - expensive physio lol

3.5 about no more goals in the chelsea game looks good value to me - has the game been tight?

Fundamentalist - 06 Apr 2005 20:41 - 2128 of 10502

Fundamentalist - 07 Apr 2005 17:59 - 2132 of 10502

afternoon all

had a cracking afternoon on the horses after a ropey start

trading wise made nearly 60% of my max bet size, gambling at aintree had 3 winners out of 4 bets

:-)

I find I need to modify my style with these big races. The market moves much slower than I am used to!!

Sporting look value for a goal at the moment IMO.

Fundamentalist - 07 Apr 2005 21:25 - 2134 of 10502

evening scrip

agree the big races - i find them impossible to trade based on volume of money - tend to find myself trading at leicester whilst gambling at aintree/cheltenham etc

hope your wrong on sporting - want to see newcastle keep a clean sheet either they have no chance in the second leg

edit: milner should have buried the tie - no composure at all

Fundamentalist - 07 Apr 2005 21:33 - 2135 of 10502

how many chances do they want to put this tie away

Kayak - 07 Apr 2005 21:35 - 2136 of 10502

Much or most of the movement on many horses is traders trading in the direction of the movement (which is why it often comes back so quickly). Where there are a lot of traders and low liquidity the price moves a lot, on the bigger races with high liquidity the traders don't manage to move it much.

Scripophilist - 07 Apr 2005 21:42 - 2137 of 10502

Thats what we were discussing Kayak.

Scripophilist - 07 Apr 2005 21:43 - 2138 of 10502

Have any of the new financial markets taken off yet? Haven't drifted into them recently as the liquidity was so poor.

Fundamentalist - 07 Apr 2005 21:44 - 2139 of 10502

kayak

the big races, such as aintree, have very high liquidity (not low as you say) hence it takes a lot more than a few traders to move a market - there is often 10k+ on each side of the book on the favourite

Kayak - 07 Apr 2005 21:45 - 2140 of 10502

sorry, meant high, have amended.

Scripophilist - 07 Apr 2005 21:47 - 2141 of 10502

Fundy, Had a few quid laying Newcastle but didn't come off. Pretty close though, I think Sporting deserved a goal. Especially looking at the stats.

Scrip

thank you for your money lol

i was backing newcastle from 1.4 - to me sporting never created a clear cut chance in the last half hour - all the good chances were newcastles

Fundamentalist - 07 Apr 2005 21:51 - 2143 of 10502

scrip

you around in the morning - got caught up with planners hence couldnt call

Fundamentalist - 07 Apr 2005 22:00 - 2144 of 10502

Dont you just love it sometimes - just turned over to watch the golf having laid woods - the first shot he plays that i see is him putting for eagle - he putts it off the green and into the water lol!!!!!

Scripophilist - 07 Apr 2005 22:20 - 2145 of 10502

I'll be on the train into London from 9am so you can call on my mobile if you wish.

Re: Golf, saw that. Believe it or not when I started all this laying and backing business Woods was often 2-1 to win any major. I laid him nearly all the time it was a great profit centre. Harrington is playing well at the moment.
